Venice opens with Sicilian epic, U.S. films dominate
ADVERTISEMENT
VENICE - The Venice film festival opens on Wednesday with Italian movie "Baaria," an epic Sicilian drama taking in Fascism, World War Two and Communism and billed as one of the country's biggest movies ever. Organizers will hope director Giuseppe Tornatore's entry wins over audiences after a series of Italian disappointments in recent years, although it is Hollywood which looks set to grab most of the headlines during the 11-day cinema showcase.
Wynette to join Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The late Tammy Wynette will be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame at a formal ceremony on October 18, officials said on Tuesday. Wynette, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame who died in 1998, co-wrote her signature song "Stand By Your Man" and the hit "Til I Can Make It On My Own."
Documentary explores Hefner's "serious" side
TORONTO - Hugh Hefner is bringing his Playboy party to the Toronto International Film Festival. Hefner said he'll be in Toronto with his "girlfriends" as part of the promotional push and party parade for the world premiere of "Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel," by Oscar-winning documentary maker Brigitte Berman.
"Mad Men" renewed by AMC for fourth season
LOS ANGELES - The office boozing and hijinks on "Mad Men" will continue for a fourth season on AMC next summer, the cable channel said on Tuesday. The renewal of the 1960s-set advertising drama is not exactly a shock given that series creator Matthew Weiner earlier this year signed a contract with producer Lionsgate to return for the third and fourth seasons.
"Family Guy" shuffles its creative ranks
LOS ANGELES - There's been a change at the helm of Fox's top animated comedy, "Family Guy." Series veterans Steve Callaghan and Mark Hentemann have signed separate three-year deals with the show's producer, 20th Century Fox TV. Under the lucrative seven-figure pacts, the two have been promoted to executive producers and named showrunners.
Them Crooked Vultures kicking off tour in Texas
NEW YORK - Them Crooked Vultures -- the supergroup featuring Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones -- will embark on its first North American tour next month. The trek includes an October 2 appearance on the opening night of the Austin City Limits festival, as well as a related club gig the night before at Stubb's BBQ.
Rising stars rank high with summer film fans: poll
LOS ANGELES - Films with rising stars like Bradley Cooper and Megan Fox dominated box offices this summer, and a new poll on Tuesday by online ticket seller Moviefone shows fans favored those flicks with fresh faces. Thirty-five percent of respondents to a Moviefone poll named surprise hit comedy "The Hangover" the summer movie "most worth" the price of admission, while 33 percent called ancient biblical caper "Year One" the biggest waste of their money, despite the fact it starred top comedian Jack Black.
New Miss Marple actress gets fresh start at 68
LONDON - Not many actresses get a career-changing chance at 68. For Julia McKenzie, already a successful stage and TV performer, it came when she was chosen as British television's new Miss Marple, Agatha Christie's famous amateur detective.
Mayweather-Marquez fight to screen live in theaters
LOS ANGELES - Boxing will return to movie theaters for the first time in almost three decades -- and in high definition -- with the September 19 welterweight championship bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez, it was announced Monday. More than 170 screens will have the fight and its undercard from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Among the circuits participating are AMC, Cinemark, Cobb, Kerasotes, Malco, Marcus, National Amusements and Regal.
Chris Brown says never stopped loving Rihanna
LOS ANGELES - R&B singer Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to beating ex-girlfriend Rihanna, said he still loves her and details of the assault are blurred in his memory roughly six months later. Brown, who rose to fame as a teenager with hits like "Kiss, Kiss," was sentenced last week to five years probation and some community service for assaulting Rihanna in February on the eve of the music industry's Grammy awards.
