Sony CEO Howard Stringer will announce the 3D TV launch as well as plans to make its Vaio PCs, PlayStation 3 game machines and Blu-ray players compatible with the technology at the IFA electronics trade show in Berlin on Wednesday, the FT said. The newspaper said Stringer is expected to tell the audience: "As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed. But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home." Internet providers seek low broadband bar WASHINGTON - The biggest U.S. Internet service providers urged regulators to adopt a conservative definition of "broadband," arguing for minimum speeds that were substantially below many other nations. The submissions were filed with the Federal Communications Commission which had sought comments by August 31 on how the agency should define broadband for a report to be submitted to Congress early next year. CellStories offers a handful of literature for free NEW YORK - A website launched on Tuesday will post a short story every weekday to any Web-enabled cellphone for free in what some see as an underground challenge to dominant digital reading devices such as Amazon's Kindle. Amazon.com <AMZN.O> and Sony Corp <6758.T> have bet heavily on creating book-sized devices designed exclusively to read, in contrast to smaller gadgets such as Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone, which can serve as a reader among other functions. Germany: Google book deal violates copyright law WASHINGTON - Google Inc's <GOOG.O> plan to digitize millions of books would violate German copyright law and the country's privacy protections for Internet users, the German government said in a U.S. court filing. Germany opposes a proposed settlement, which Google reached with the Authors Guild and Association of American Publishers Inc among others in October 2008, because Google could digitize books by German authors without their consent, according to filing dated Monday. Google mail suffers widespread outage NEW YORK that it fixed the problem but was still investigating the cause of the outage, which lasted for over an hour. EBay to sell 65 percent of Skype for $1.9 billion NEW YORK - Internet auction house EBay Inc <EBAY.O> plans to sell a majority stake in its online phone unit Skype for $1.9 billion to private investors including Silver Lake, a deal analysts said was worth more than expected but may curb eBay's growth potential. The deal valued Skype at $2.75 billion but was well below the $3.1 billion eBay spent in acquiring Skype, and shares in eBay fell more than 2 percent after the news. Music label video site Vevo in talks with CBS, NBC NEW YORK - Vevo, an online music video start-up backed by two major music labels and supported by YouTube's technology platform, is in talks with CBS Corp <CBS.N> and NBC to license and develop shows for the Web, according to two people familiar with the talks. The website Vevo is the music industry's answer to Hulu, the popular U.S.-based online service backed by NBC Universal, News Corp <NWSA.O> and Walt Disney Co <DIS.N>. Social networking sites grab big slice of Web ads SAN FRANCISCO - About one of every five Internet display ads in the United States is viewed on a social networking Web site like MySpace and Facebook, according to a new report. The report by analytics firm comScore underscores the increasing prominence of social media sites in the Internet landscape and broadening acceptance of the sites by brand advertisers. Germany warns pollsters after Twitter leak BERLIN - Germany's chief electoral commissioner told pollsters on Tuesday to be vigilant with their exit poll data on the September 27 federal election after state results were published on Twitter before polls closed on Sunday. Roderich Egeler told a news conference he expected the polling institutes that supply exit poll data to German networks to takes steps to ensure the information is not leaked out on the Twitter social networking site in breach of German law. Security prompts checks on telecoms gear in India NEW DELHI - India is considering a new law allowing strict checking of all imported telecommunications equipment, the latest move to plug security holes after last year's Mumbai attacks. Officials said on Tuesday the government also wants to set up a telecoms equipment testing center, where all imported gadgets and technology sold by private operators could be first tested to ensure they do not compromise India's security.
