After the second full day of proceedings, the court declared the trial "closed" Saturday and the defendant, 61-year-old Alan Gross, ready for "sentencing," adding that its "verdict will be made public in coming days," according to an official statement read on Cuban television. The statement also said that during his trial, Gross "acknowledged that he had been used and duped" by his company, Development Alternatives, which had a contract with the US State Department. He also accused the contractor of "having put him in danger, leading him to his current situation and ruining the life and economic well-being of him and his family," according to the Cuban official statement. There was no official US statement about the trial, but a diplomat with the US Interests Section in Cuba said, "The trial has concluded," and added that Gross's lawyer would be informed of the verdict "but we don't know when." Cuban prosecutors were seeking 20 years in prison for Gross, who was working under contract with the State Department when he was arrested in late 2009 for distributing cell phones and computers to members of the island's struggling Jewish community. He was charged with "acts against the independence and territorial integrity of the state." The statement from the court gave no indication of whether the prosecution had maintained these charges throughout the trial or changed them in the process. A total of 10 witnesses were heard during the trial, and 26 expert reports were presented. But it said that Gross was accused of "introducing and developing a subversive project to bring down the Cuban revolution." It added that the project "targeted the country's youths, universities as well as cultural and religious centers and women's and ethnic groups." "In trying to reach those goals, he wanted to use sophisticated technologies in order to create outside the control of Cuban authorities underground communications networks designed to foment provocations against the revolution," the statement said. The United States has denied the charges, while acknowledging that Gross was working for Development Alternatives. Officials have said that under Cuban law, the five-judge panel has as many as six days after the conclusion of a trial to announce the verdict. The case has drawn strenuous protests from the United States and chilled a brief warming in US-Cuban relations that followed President Barack Obama's taking office. "We call on the government of Cuba to release him, and unconditionally allow him to leave Cuba and return to his family to bring an end to their long ordeal," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Washington shortly before the trial started. Notably, Gross's defense lawyer is Nuris Pinero, a Cuban who represented the families of five Cubans imprisoned in the United States for the past 12 years on espionage charges. Cuba recognizes that the five were its agents, but said they were not spying on the United States, rather on anti-Castro groups in Miami planning violent attacks against Cuba. Washington has rejected a trade of the five Cubans for Gross. Cuba and the United States have not had full diplomatic relations since 1961. Gross's wife Judy and a family lawyer, Peter Kahn, were present in the Havana court on the first day of the trial, as were US consular officials. Kahn said Gross's health was deteriorating as a result of dramatic weight loss, other physical ailments "and the extreme mental stress and anguish he continues to endure."
