Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Africa Europe Latin America Middle East North America Spain detains 41 suspected of funding Colombia rebels AFP - Saturday, October 2 Send IM Story Print MADRID (AFP) - – Spanish police said Friday they had detained 41 people suspected of laundering over 200 million euros earned from drug smuggling and using part of this money to finance Colombia's FARC rebels. "During the investigation it transpired that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia or some of its members may have been the recipients of part of the funds," a police statement said. More than 250 officers took part in the operation, in which police searched 27 homes and money transfer offices in 13 cities and towns across the country, including Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante, the statement added. Police used dogs specially trained to detect bank notes. They seized more than 150,000 euros (200,000 dollars). Police in Colombia and Ecuador were also taking action as part of the Spanish-led operation, the statement said. Spanish police opened their investigation in August 2008 after noticing a "very significant rise" in the amounts of money being transferred from Spain to Colombia and Ecuador. They estimate that since they opened their investigation the group under investigation sent over 200 million euros raised from the sale of narcotics across Europe to Colombia and Ecuador. Colombian police then identified one of the recipients of the money in Colombia, someone who was linked to the FARC rebels and was wanted for muderder and terrorism. Another 12 recipients of the money had ties to this man. During the course of their investigation, police said they made several seizurse of cocaine including 250 kilos Belgium in June 2010. Spanish public radio said the detentions were linked to the arrest in July 2008 by Spanish police of a woman suspected of being the representative of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Spain's interior ministry said at the time that Maria Remedios Garcia Albert was discovered in possession of a significant amount of money which she was preparing to send to representatives of FARC in Europe. Garcia Albert had also provided logistical support for FARC and had direct contacts with Raul Reyes, the FARC number two who was killed by Colombian troops inside Ecuador in March 2008, it added. Analysis of Reyes' computer passed on to Spanish investigators by Colombian authorities had led them to identify Garcia Albert. In March a Spanish judge charged seven FARC members and six members of the armed Basque separatist group ETA with plotting to assassinate former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and other Colombian officials while in Spain. The case was based largely on information found in Reyes' computer. The FARC, Latin America's oldest and largest insurgency, has been trying for 40 years to overthrow the Colombian government. Spain's close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine-producing region, and its extensive coastline have made it Europe's main entry point for the drug.
