Microsoft sues Motorola over Android phones

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> sued Motorola Inc <MOT.N>, alleging patent infringement on the handset maker's line of Android phones, in the latest development in a web of legal actions in the evolving smartphone business. Microsoft, the world's largest software company, said on Friday that it sued Motorola for infringement of nine Microsoft patents in the Android-based smartphones, which run on software built by Google Inc <GOOG.O>. Microsoft makes its own Windows phone software.

Facebook movie underscores cultural phenomenon

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook now counts one of every two Americans as a user, would rank behind only China and India in population if it were a country and has an estimated value of more than $30 billion, larger than that of Starbucks <SBUX.O>. What could possibly be next for a website that was created in a Harvard dorm room six years ago? Try a Hollywood film, "The Social Network," that opens nationally on Friday and is already prompting discussion of Academy Awards.

New HP CEO fails to rouse investors, shares slide

SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co's <HPQ.N> new CEO failed to impress Wall Street in his first conference call with investors, as doubts persisted as to whether the Silicon Valley outsider has the experience to steer the sprawling company. HP shares slid 3.4 percent after former SAP <SAPG.DE> CEO Leo Apotheker provided few details on his plans to accelerate sales growth, in a performance one analyst called "lackluster.

U.S. Cyber Command slips behind schedule

WASHINGTON - U.S. Cyber Command, responsible for shielding 15,000 U.S. military networks and for being ready to go to war in cyberspace, has slipped behind schedule for becoming fully operational, the Defense Department said on Friday. The command is still putting necessary capabilities in place, said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. It had been due to be declared fully operational no later than this month, a deadline some had read as October 1.

FBI says Ukraine arrests 5 in cybercrime case

WASHINGTON - Ukraine authorities have arrested five individuals who allegedly directed a global cybercrime scheme that used a version of the Zeus Trojan computer virus to steal $70 million from U.S. bank accounts, FBI officials said on Friday. They told a news briefing that Ukraine authorities took the five individuals into custody and conducted searches under eight warrants on Thursday as part of an international crackdown that dismantled the operation this week.

Privately held Facebook in 5-for-1 stock split

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook, the world's No. 1 Internet social network, is splitting its stock, as shares in the privately held company have surged roughly seven-fold in the past 15 months. A Facebook spokesman told Reuters on Friday that Facebook is enacting a 5-for-1 split of the company's shares in order to bring the value "back down into the range of other private companies."

India granted limited BlackBerry Messenger access

NEW DELHI - The maker of the BlackBerry smartphone has granted India's government manual access to its Messenger service and has promised automated access by January 1, enabling authorities to track such messages in real time, the country's top interior ministry official said on Friday. India, one of the world's fastest growing mobile telephone markets, also wants access to encrypted email traffic sent via Research In Motion's enterprise servers. The BlackBerry maker says its system is designed so that only the sponsoring business or organization has the technical capability to grant such access.

Microsoft names veteran insider as Office head

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> named company veteran Kurt DelBene as head of its lucrative Office business on Friday, taking over from Stephen Elop, who left the world's largest software company to become chief executive officer of Nokia Corp <NOK1V.HE> last month. Microsoft's Office suite of business applications -- including well-known programs such as Word, Outlook, SharePoint and Excel -- is a huge money-maker for the company and central to its move toward providing software online.

Facebook founder survives "Social Network" so far

LOS ANGELES - Who is winning the Mark Zuckerberg PR battle? As Sony's "The Social Network," the unauthorized story of Zuckerberg and the origins of Facebook, hits theaters Friday, the answer might be both the studio and the press-shy billionaire.
