ADVERTISEMENT The scandal has dealt a blow to Ozawa and his Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), which was poised to win the country's next general elections, which must be held before September. The donations probe has also affected the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), as several key figures including a former prime minister admitted they too had taken money from the same construction company involved with the DPJ. A total of 57 percent of voters think Ozawa should step down as DPJ leader to take responsibility for the scandal, according to the 1,686 people polled by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper. Only 33 percent said he should stay in office, the poll showed. The rest were undecided or did not respond. Ozawa -- who had been seen likely to replace unpopular Prime Minister Taro Aso after elections, thereby ending half a century of almost uninterrupted LDP rule -- has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed calls for his resignation. But 79 percent of voters polled said they remained unconvinced by his explanations about the donations. Prosecutors have alleged that Ozawa's aide took illegal donations from Nishimatsu Construction Co. through apparent front groups. Under Japanese law, companies can donate money only to political parties, not to individual politicians, and donors must be clearly identified. The Tokyo Shimbun daily said Nishimatsu had allegedly funnelled about 300 million yen to Ozawa and his supporters over more than a decade. Former prime minister and LDP heavyweight Yoshiro Mori, as well as an advisor Aso and a deputy cabinet minister, have since said they too unknowingly took money from groups linked to the same firm, and would return the funds. Prosecutors are also expected to question accountants for the political group run by trade minister Toshihiro Nikai in connection with the scandal, business daily Nikkei reported Sunday.
