Philippine communist rebels declare cease-fire
AP - Saturday, December 20
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine communist rebels on Friday declared a Christmas holiday cease-fire but said their forces will remain on alert for possible military attacks.
In a statement, the central committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines said it ordered its military arm _ the New People's Army or NPA _ to observe the truce on Dec. 24-Dec. 26 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1, "in unity with the Filipino people's holiday traditions."
The government three days earlier declared a unilateral cease-fire with the 5,000-strong NPA during the same periods, except on Dec. 26 _ the 40th anniversary of the Maoist party.
The rebels said the cease-fire will allow their fighters, party members and supporters to openly celebrate anniversary festivities in guerrilla fronts and clandestinely in urban centers.
Peace talks to end one of Asia's longest-running insurgencies were suspended by the rebels in 2004 after they accused the government of instigating the inclusion of the Communist Party and the NPA on the U.S. lists of terrorist organizations.
In an informal meeting brokered by Norway in Oslo early this month, rebel negotiators rejected an indefinite cease-fire pushed by the government as a condition for resuming formal talks. No new dates for further meetings have been scheduled.
