SKorea says photos not enough to assess Kim's health
AFP - 1 hour 35 minutes ago
SEOUL (AFP) - - Weekend photos released by North Korea of leader Kim Jong-Il are no indication of his state of health, South Korea's government said Monday.
The North's official media on Sunday released photographs of Kim watching a football match in a renewed bid to quell mounting outside speculation about his health.
"It is difficult to know Chairman Kim's health condition merely with photos, still photos," unification ministry spokesman Kim Ho-Nyoun told a briefing.
He declined further comment on the health of Kim, who is widely believed to have suffered a stroke around mid-August.
The new photos purportedly show Kim, 66, watching a football match between two army teams but there was no information on when or where they were taken.
Analysts in Seoul said the communist state is struggling to calm speculation about its leader.
In one photo Kim sits smiling on a sofa inside a glass structure wearing his trademark sunglasses. His full cheeks and bouffant hair look the same as usual.
With his deputies standing or sitting nearby, Kim wears a brown winter jacket. Trees in the background have autumnal colours.
Another photo shows Kim standing to give instructions to his deputies outside an unidentified building, with his right arm raised but his left arm by his side.
There was no single picture showing both Kim and the game in progress, only separate images of him and of the game.
After Kim failed to attend a September 9 parade marking the country's 60th anniversary, Seoul officials said he had undergone brain surgery following a stroke around mid-August but was recovering well.
On October 4 KCNA reported Kim watched a student football match, and on October 11 state television released still photos of him inspecting a women's army unit. No dates for the events were disclosed.
US and South Korean officials said foliage shown in the photos of the inspection of the women's army unit appeared to indicate they were taken before his reported illness.
Japan's Prime Minister Taro Aso said last week Kim was probably in hospital but still capable of making decisions about his hardline communist state.
Speculation intensified on Thursday when Kim failed to attend a state funeral for former vice president Pak Song-Chol.
