Titans preserve perfect record with NFL win over Packers
AFP - 2 hours 2 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - - The Tennessee Titans remained unbeaten in the National Football League as Rob Bironas booted a 41-yard field goal to seal a 19-16 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers.
It was redemption for Bironas, who had a chance kick a game-winner in regulation but bounced a 47-yard attempt off the upright on Sunday.
"I was hoping for exactly what happened," Bironas said. "We'd win the toss and get another shot at it. I don't miss many, so I definitely wanted another shot at it."
The Packers, who were coming off their bye week tied the game with five minutes left on Mason Crosby's third field goal.
But Green Bay was forced to punt on what proved to be their final drive in regulation.
The Titans improved to 8-0 for the season, and stretched their regular-season winning streak to 11-0, even though Titans quarterback Kerry Collins completed only 49 percent of his passes and threw for just 180 yards.
"We found another way to win," Collins said. "I didn't play my best game. I think a lot of guys here would say the same thing."
The reigning Super Bowl champion New York Giants rolled past injury-depleted division rivals Dallas 35-14.
The victory kept the Giants in first place and unbeaten in the NFC East, while the reeling Cowboys lost for the third time in their last four games and are last in the division.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning passed for 147 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, and New York out-gained Dallas 319 yards to 183.
Brad Johnson and Brooks Bollinger, standing in for injured quarterback Tony Romo, combined to pass for 134 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions for Dallas.
"When a football team comes in here and it is kind of depleted as far as injuries go, you don't want to give them any sunlight," said Giants defensive end Justin Tuck. "You don't want to give them any light whatsoever."
The Cowboys, tipped as pre-season favorites, now have a needed bye week, after which they expect to have Romo back from a broken finger.
"It makes you scratch your head a little bit," Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens said. "But I think no one in this locker room has given up hope. I'm at the top of that. I haven't given up hope. "I think over the bye week, we'll have those things corrected and come out and play better in the second half of the season."
The Minnesota Vikings notched a 28-21 victory over the Houston Texans, the Vikings' third victory in the past four games putting an end to Houston's three-game winning streak.
The New York Jets defeated Buffalo 26-17 to pull even with the Bills in the AFC East. They were joined on 5-3 by the New England Patriots, who fell 18-15 to the Indianapolis Colts.
The Arizona Cardinals thrashed the St. Louis Rams 34-13, taking control with a 24-point second quarter.
The Chicago Bears rallied for a 27-23 victory over the winless Detroit Lions.
Rex Grossman came off the bench in place of injured quarterback Kyle Orton and scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Bears with less than six minutes to play.
In Cincinnati, the Bengals notched their first victory of the season, stopping a late two-point conversion attempt to preserve a 21-19 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Baltimore Ravens rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit to beat the Cleveland Browns 37-27.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers engineered the biggest comeback in franchise history as they rallied from a 21-point deficit for a 30-27 overtime victory over Kansas City.
The Atlanta Falcons handed the Oakland Raiders a humiliating 24-0 loss, holding the Raiders to just 77 total yards. That was the fewest gained by the Raiders since they amassed only 58 in a 1961 game against the Chargers.
In other games, Miami beat Denver 26-17 and Philadelphia downed Seattle 26-7.
