Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Weekend Edition World Canadian poised to win poker championship AFP - Monday, November 8 Send IM Story Print Canadian poised to win poker championship LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) - – A 23-year-old college dropout from Quebec is poised to become the first Canadian winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event on Monday when he faces off with an unprecedented chip advantage against a 24-year-old from Florida. Jonathan Duhamel of Montreal holds 98 percent of the chips in the No-Limit Texas Hold Em tournament and is now the overwhelming favorite to take the most prestigious title in poker along with its 8.9-million-dollar top prize. Duhamel will go head to head with Floridian John Racener, both of whom outlasted seven competitors during 14 hours of play that began mid-day Saturday. The initial field of 7,319 entrants was whittled down in July to the nine finalists who reconvened in the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio Las Vegas resort. Duhamel, who began play on Saturday in the lead but lost and regained it several times, pulled way out ahead in chips early Sunday when he won a tournament-record 95.05 million chip pot from South Korea-born Joseph Cheong when Cheong bet big the ace-seven combination he held. Duhamel had a pair of queens, and none of the cards that followed helped Cheong. Cheong was knocked out of the tournament seven hands later, departing in third place to receive a 4.1-million-dollar payout. Duhamel ended the session with 188.95 million chips, a vast lead over Racener's 30.75 million. The tournament ends when one of them has all 219.7 million. Second place in the tournament is worth 5.5 million dollars. In all, 68.8 million dollars in prize money was distributed among the top 747 finishers. Duhamel is known for playing in black hooded sweatshirts that shroud his stubbly face. He had generally only played cash games on the Internet before he entered this World Series event, giving up the pursuit of a finance degree at University of Quebecat Montreal at age 19 to focus on poker. "I decided I could make more money doing this, that I was very good at it," Duhamel said. "I think I was right." Racener is better known in professional poker circles. He borrowed 50 dollars from his mother when he was 18 and turned it into 30,000 dollars in six weeks of online play and, prior to this event, had won 3.5 million in poker tournaments. To enter the World Series of Poker Main Event, players can either pay the 10,000-dollar buy-in or win a tournament at a casino or on the Internet and have the entry fee covered for them. This year's nine players at the Final Table included six Americans, two Canadians and an Italian, 26-year-old aspiring filmmaker Filippo Candio. Candio, of Sardinia, Italy, was the first Italian to make it to the Final Table and earned 3.1 million dollars for finishing fourth. Players from more than 92 nations were among the 7,319 entrants. "I was very proud to represent my country and do things for poker in Italy," Candio said after his elimination. "I am pleased with the way I played. I think there are going to be many more players from my country who (do well) at the World Series." Play resumes at 8:00 pm on Monday (0400 GMT Tuesday).
