State media Sunday mentioned Kim's youngest son Jong-Un right after his father when listing members of a state committee organising the funeral of prominent military figure Jo Myong-Rok. The son, believed aged 27, was barely known outside the country until he was made a general and given powerful party posts in late September during the ruling communist party's biggest political gathering for 30 years. A senior official later confirmed Jong-Un's status as heir apparent to the ailing 68-year-old leader, who suffered a stroke in 2008. Jo, first vice-chairman of the militaristic state's National Defence Commission and army vice marshal, died Saturday aged 82. The North formed a "state funeral committee with Kim Jong-Il as its chairman and Kim Jong-Un and 169 others as its members," the Korean Central News Agency said Sunday. The committee includes the most powerful party, government and military figures including Kim Yong-Nam, the de facto head of state, and Ri Yong-Ho, the army chief of staff and vice marshal. The two men, along with Premier Choe Yong-Rim, had previously been listed before Jong-Un since state media began reporting the son's name in late September. "You can say now he's (Jong-Un) officially the number two man in the North's political system," Baek Seung-Joo of the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses told AFP. An official list is a "good indication of the political hierarchy in a socialist country like the North", he said. Baek, however, said it was unlikely Jong-Un would take over the powerful military posts left vacant by Jo's death. "Jong-Un is the vice chairman of the party's central military commission, which is high enough to put everyone else under him. He doesn't really need more official titles to strengthen his power," he said. Park Hyeong-Jung, a researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said Jong-Un's upgraded status in the state protocol is "a meaningful change". A South Korean security official quoted by Chosun Ilbo newspaper said Jong-Un "seems to have risen to second place some 40 days since he was rated sixth" during the September 28 party meeting. Little is known about the young protege, who was educated in Switzerland and bears a striking resemblance to his grandfather and founding president Kim Il-Sung. Kim Jong-Il took over after his father died in 1994.
