The Karachi Stock Exchange benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> ended 0.31 percent, or 30.56 points, up at 9,823.37 on turnover of 31.86 million shares. "Institutions came in at lower levels but an air of cautiousness still prevails over market players who are hesitant to enter prior to clarity on the actual amount of destruction caused by the floods," Ahfaz Mustafa, managing director at Ismail Iqbal Securities Ltd. The market has lost 5.8 percent since the floods began two weeks ago. The floods, triggered by torrential monsoon downpours have swamped Pakistan's Indus river basin, killing more than 1,600 people, forcing 2 million from their homes and disrupting the lives of about 14 million people, or 8 percent of the population. Authorities are assessing the damage but the Finance Ministry said this week the floods meant the country would miss this year's 4.5 percent gross domestic product growth target though it was not clear by how much. Growth was 4.1 percent in the last fiscal year. The United Nations has appealed for $459 million in emergency aid and says long-term rehabilitation of the vital agriculture sector would cost billions of dollars. [ID:nSGE67B05O] With higher transport costs and food shortages, inflation, and the public anger that will spark, is a major worry. The consumer price index came in at 12.34 year-on-year in July and will head higher. Prices have been rising sharply in markets across the country but they traditionally do in the run-up to Ramadan. The government has already been struggling to meet an IMF target for a fiscal deficit 4 percent of gross domestic product this year. The flood crisis will mean more strain. One analyst said he expected a fiscal deficit of 8 percent this year. If that is financed by borrowing from the central bank, inflation will be pushed up further. The flood crisis has put unpopular President Asif Ali Zardari on the defensive and improved the standing of the military which is spearheading relief efforts. In the currency market, the rupee <PKR=> ended firmer at 85.60/65 to the dollar, compared with Wednesday's close of 85.76/80 amid lack of import payments. Dealers said the rupee could come under more pressure in the short-term because of higher demand for dollars for import payments. The rupee fell to a record low of 85.80 on July 12 amid high demand for dollars from importers as well as on debt repayments. In the money market, overnight rates fell to end between 11.00 percent and 11.50 percent, compared with Wednesday's close of 12.90 percent amid liquidity in the interbank market. The money market and currency market were closed on Thursday.
