Italy's Molinari shares early lead at PGA Championship
SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin (AFP) - – Italy's Francesco Molinari fired a four-under 68 to seize a share of the lead with American Bubba Watson at the mid-way point of the opening round of the PGA Championship Thursday.
Molinari hit 16 of 18 fairways on the Whistling Straits course and rolled in five birdies to go with a bogey in his second appearance in the final major championship of the season.
It was a good day all around for the Molinari family as his older brother Edoardo also had a strong round, shooting a one-under 71.
"It was a pretty solid round," said the 27-year-old Francesco. "I hit the ball quite well all day and basically just tried to stay out of trouble."
Edoardo, 29, collected his first European Tour victory earlier this year.
Watson made his presence known with a round that included six birdies, 10 pars and two bogeys in the first round which was delayed at the start because of dense fog.
Australian Jason Day is part of a group at three-under, including Ernie Els who was still on the course as it is unlikely everyone will finish their rounds because of the delay.
Day, who is competing in his first PGA Championship, had taken the early clubhouse lead with a three-under 69.
Day was in the opening group that teed off from the 10th hole but he had to wait three hours and 10 minutes to get started because of a fog delay.
He finished with five birdies and made the turn at 34 on the Whistling Straits course.
It didnt take long for Tiger Woods to shake off the most miserable performance of his career.
The 14-time major championship winner shot a one-under 71 after starting his round with three birdies on the first four holes.
Woods is three shots back of the leaders in a group that also includes Steve Elkington, Brian Davis and Camilo Villegas.
Day birdied his 17th hole of the day - the par-four 507 yard eighth - to move to four under and into a tie for the lead before giving one shot back with a bogey on his final hole.
He opened his round with four pars then birdied two of the next three holes.
Day qualified for the PGA Championship by winning the Byron Nelson Championship in May. He finished tied for 60th at the British Open at St. Andrews.
Woods, who is fresh off his worst career performance at the Bridgestone Invitational, needed just four putts on the first four holes after starting his round off the 10th tee.
Woods is playing with defending champion Yang Yong-eun and 2004 PGA Championship winner Vijay Singh.
Wearing a white shirt in the muggy conditions, Woods' approach from 80 feet out on the par-four 361-yard 10th hole landed on the green before snaking in a 10 foot putt for birdie.
Woods hit another superb tee shot on his second hole and followed it up with an iron shot landed 10 feet from the pin.
His first errant shot came off the tee at No. 12 as he put it over the green and across a public path, but he was able to recover and get his second shot on the green and save par.
Even before the fog struck Thursday morning, the par-72, 7,507 yard course had been hit by bad weather.
Thunderstorms dumped more than four centimetres of rain on the course Wednesday, forming puddles in many of the close to 1,000 bunkers and softening the fairways and greens.
