Madonna appears in Malawi court in adoption bid
ADVERTISEMENT
LILONGWE - A court in Malawi is expected to rule on Friday whether U.S. pop singer Madonna can adopt a second child from the southern African country, a move likely to be opposed by human rights groups. Madonna appeared in court on Monday seeking to adopt four-year-old Mercy James. The case was adjourned until April 3.
Fox News' Bill O'Reilly boycotting Sean Penn films
LOS ANGELES - You can't deny Bill O'Reilly's success. On Tuesday, the fiery host of Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" will mark his 100th consecutive month as the No. 1-rated cable news show. A former schoolteacher who first gained national prominence as the host of "Inside Edition," O'Reilly boasts three Emmys and several best-selling books.
Credit crunch impairs theaters' digital vision
LOS ANGELES - At the Carmike Encore Park Cinemas megaplex in Elkhart, Ind., box office receipts are way up this year. But the returns at the candy counter aren't so sweet. In fact, sales last year of sugary snacks, popcorn and soft drinks barely reached 2007 levels in Elkhart, and this year could be worse.
ABC, "Survivor" producer launch bailout program
LOS ANGELES to part with the requested amount of their own money, or they leave empty handed. The format originated in Japan and has since become a worldwide success, with BBC Two's "Dragon's Den" running for six seasons and airing domestically on BBC America.
Maurice Jarre, composer of "Zhivago" score, dies
PARIS - Oscar-winning French composer Maurice Jarre, who wrote the rich, lyrical scores for films including "Doctor Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia," has died in Los Angeles at the age of 84. Jarre's music won him Academy Awards for those classics and for "A Passage to India," all directed by David Lean. He also worked with directors from Alfred Hitchcock and Luchino Visconti to Peter Weir.
Prince battles sound problems on one-night tour
LOS ANGELES - In 1985, Prince released "Around the World in a Day." Nearly 25 years later, he launched his latest -- a three-CD set called "Lotusflow3r," available exclusively through Target and his Web site -- by going around the newish L.A. Live entertainment complex in a night. Although he didn't perform each of the new albums in their entirety at each venue, Prince stuck to the numeral three theme, performing three different sets, each with distinct musical flavors and backing musicians, at the complex's trio of venues: the Nokia Theater, the Conga Room and Club Nokia.
Kathy Bates on "Blind Side" team
LOS ANGELES - Kathy Bates has joined Sandra Bullock in "The Blind Side," a football comedy-drama based on the best-selling novel by Michael Lewis. The project tells the true story of football player Michael Oher, projected to be one of the first players selected in this year's NFL draft.
Big love: Fox orders heavyweight dating show
LOS ANGELES - Fox is developing a dating-competition series that casts "average-looking" people. The series, titled "More to Love," is billed as the first "dating show for the rest of us," throwing open its doors to overweight contestants.
Wrestling star Cena is dead weight in "12 Rounds"
NEW YORK , who's been leading the FBI a merry chase for three years. It's a shame Miles' daredevil girlfriend died in the process, but it was more Miles' fault than Danny's: If Miles hadn't told her to run, she wouldn't have been pasted by that oncoming car.
Eric Bana loves his car, moviegoers won't
SYDNEY - Eric Bana's directorial debut "Love the Beast," documenting a quarter-century love affair with his 1974 Ford Falcon coupe, could easily be dismissed as a vanity project. Except that the immensely likable Australian actor seems incapable of conceit. He sincerely believes this story must be told, that his quasi-religious fervor for his beloved machine will, if not exactly convert non-revheads, at least help them understand how such an emotional bond can exist. So the Hollywood star and motor racing enthusiast takes us on a meandering journey through his shared history with the car, dotted with barely relevant detours and are-we-there-yet moments.
