ADVERTISEMENT Hundreds of rescue workers had been deployed after the dam collapsed Friday and a wall of water surged through hundreds of homes and buildings in the middle-class Cireundeu and Ciputat suburbs of southern Jakarta. "Some 400 rescuers with more than 1,000 police and military personnel started from this morning to scour for more bodies on the fourth day of this operation," search and rescue coordinator Suyatno told AFP. He said the search would be expanded to the nearby Pesanggrahan River where bodies may have been carried by the torrent, as hopes dimmed that any of the missing would be found alive. "For those who have been swept away into the water there's little chance they will survive," said Suyatno, who uses only one name. He said the lack of accurate records on residents of the area was adding to confusion about the number of missing, which grew from 102 to 115 overnight. Authorities have blamed the disaster on high water pressure following an intense downpour, which burst the 10-metre-high (33-foot) Situ Gintung dam, built in 1933 when Indonesia was under Dutch colonial rule. But residents and environmentalists have said the dam burst because it had not been properly maintained. Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which is at its peak between December and February, and account for more deaths in the vast archipelago every year than earthquakes and other natural disasters.
