Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Singapore Asia Pacific World China shares up on hopes for planning meeting AP - Friday, February 26 Send IM Story Print SHANGHAI – Chinese shares rose for a second day Thursday led by real estate developers, as investors expected the annual national planning meeting next week to help bolster economic growth. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index jumped 38.44 points, or 1.3 percent, to close at 3,060.62. The Shenzhen Composite Index for China's smaller second exchange edged up 1.7 percent to 1,173.66. After days of market fluctuations on liquidity jitters, investors were now looking forward to the annual National Peoples' Congress meeting opening next week, analysts said. "Sectors closely linked to government policies showed strong performances, because every year the tone of the meeting is about stability of the economy rather than surprises," said Mao Nan, a strategist for Oriental Securities in Shanghai. Real estate shares rebounded after previous slumps. Poly Real Estate Group, China's No. 2 developer, jumped 3.1 percent to 19.96 yuan, while rival China Vanke Ltd. gained 2.7 percent to 9.48 yuan. Financials were boosted by news reports that the long-awaited margin trading might be launched next month. Northeastern Securities Co. rose 3.3 percent to 34.58 yuan, while Citic Securities, China's biggest brokerage by market value, climbed by 1.8 percent to 27.61 yuan. China Construction Bank Ltd. added 1.3 percent to 5.68 yuan, while Bank of China Ltd. gained 1.2 percent to 4.16 yuan. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., China's biggest commercial lender, jumped 1 percent to 4.88 yuan. Midsize lender Pudong Development Bank Ltd. soared 5.4 percent to 20.72 yuan. The government's release of public hospital reform pilot plans kindled buying sentiment in medical-related companies. Shanghai RAAS Blood Products Co. soared 9.5 percent to 39.4 yuan, while Hualan Biological Engineering Inc. surged 5.2 percent to 65 yuan. In currency markets, the yuan strengthened to 6.8266 to the U.S. dollar, up from Wednesday's close of 6.8270.
