VANCOUVER (AFP) - – From the most desolate frozen outpost to the crowded bars of every major city, Canadians celebrated their National Hockey League stars' 7-3 rout of arch-rival Russia in Wednesday's Vancouver Olympics quarter-finals. "We always feel under pressure playing for Canada. That's the way it is," Canadian star Sidney Crosby said. "Today we used it to energize us." Ground zero for the roar of delight from a red-clad sea of fans was Canada Hockey Place arena, where Canada won a fight for national honour and people paid as much as 4,000 dollars a ticket for the chance to wach it live. "It's a pretty amazing atmosphere," Crosby said. "We always talk about the Canada-Russia rivalry. We feel it more than ever in this building." From the screams of delight when Canada skated onto the ice for the first time until the standing ovation at the final buzzer and through seven goals in between, flag-waving, body-painting people delighted in a hockey frenzy. "We were loose," Canada defenceman Dan Boyle said. "It's a hard thing to do playing in this country, playing in front of these fans but I thought we were able to do it pretty well." Ryan Getzlaf gave Canada the lead for good only 2:21 into the first period. Once Boyle and Rick Nash followed 46 seconds apart later in the period and Brenden Morrow added another 1:42 before the period ended, a sense of inevitability began to creep into proud and vocal Canadians. "It was an electric atmosphere," Canada goaltender Roberto Luongo said. "It was really fun to play in with the lead. It is tough to control nerves but it's a good thing. It gets you energized." Goals by Corey Perry and Shea Weber 57 seconds apart early in the second period gave Canada a 6-1 edge and the sound waves hit eardrums like a hammer. "The crowd was emotional," Canada forward Jarome Iginla said. "We were able to get them involved early and we were able to keep them in it." The thunderous roars began fading as the margin remained lopsided and time ticked away, a "Let's Go Canada" chant being started simply because the arena had been too quiet for too long. Moments that were so silent you could hear sticks and skates upon the ice gIve way to thunderous cheers. By the time the songs "Tonight's Going to Be a Good Night" and "Let's Get This Party Started" came during the second intermission, Canada led by the final margin and the party had already started at long drink stand lines. "What we're seeing are games played with emotion," said retired Canadian star Serge Savard, who played in the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union. "There's a lot of history." The Russians were the "home" team technically, but only technically, despite the best efforts of several Russia dozen supporters behind one goal. The only yells to rival Canada's hockey joy came with a standing ovation when Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue, Canada's gold medal ice dance duo, were shown on the giant arena videoscreen. Russian star Alex Ovechkin was taunted by fans once they knew his team was done, Canada supporters chanting "O-vie, O-vie" to add insult to failure.
