Fargo, ND, United States (AHN) - Rains, wet winter, and el Nino are expected to combine and deluge the United States in the coming weeks. Forecasters predict a third of the United States will face flooding this spring.
The Midwest and the East Coast are likely to experience most of the record flooding. A sequence of last fall's heavy rains, a wetter-than-usual winter and the effects of a global weather system are expected to bring a deluge of misery.
Residents near Fargo, ND, and Moorhead, MN, are already contending with flood waters from the Red River and its tributaries. The river peaked at 36.99 feet - 19 feet above flood level - Sunday morning. The river separates North Dakota, the preeminent U.S. wheat grower, and Minnesota as it flows northward into Canada. The areas surrounding its banks are wheat and sugar beet country.
Communities north of Grand Forks up to the Canadian province of Manitoba are already experiencing flooding and the Minnesota town of Oslo is totally cut off by floodwater.
Flood risk is also considered above average through much of the Mid-Atlantic, South, and the East Coast, including the Mississippi River and Ohio River basins.
Flooding is considered the deadliest weather hazard in the U.S. and is responsible for some 100 deaths a year.
