The heavily-armed gunman who opened fire at police outside the Pentagon appeared to have acted alone without any connection to terrorist groups, police said. WASHINGTON (AFP) - – The heavily-armed gunman who opened fire at police outside the Pentagon appeared to have acted alone without any connection to terrorist groups, police said Friday. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell of California, died after being shot in the head by officers, two of whom suffered minor wounds in the Thursday assault, chief Richard Keevill of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency told reporters. Media had reported that surveillance video showed Bedell talking with another man prior to the shooting at an entrance to the huge Department of Defense building outside the metro system's Pentagon station. But Keevill said the tape "pretty much confirms what we've been saying, that he acted alone." He said no motive had yet been found for the assault, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies were checking Internet posts suggesting Bedell may have harbored resentment of the US government and doubts about the attacks of September 11, 2001. "That's one of the many things we're looking at," Keevill said. Authorities had yet to confirm if the web posts were from the suspect, he said. In one posting, a user by the name JPatrickBedell wrote that he was working toward "establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions." The user also wrote "I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow," a US Marine who died in his backyard in 1991. The death was ruled a suicide but some followers of the case allege Sabow was murdered because he was on the verge of exposing extensive arms and drug shipments to and from Latin America on US military flights. One law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that there were initial indications that Bedell was mentally "unstable" and had run-ins with police. Bedell "had a couple of contacts with the law" in the past, Keevill said, without offering more details. Keevill said the gunman had driven across the country from the West coast over the past several weeks and left his car in a nearby parking garage. Police found more ammunition in the car, he said. The police chief painted a picture of a well-dressed, "well-educated" gunman quietly determined to inflict major carnage at the center of US military power. "He was very well armed," with two 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistols and several magazines, the officer said. "He walked very directly to the officers and engaged" them in a shootout at a main entrance to the building which sent employees diving for cover, Keevill said. There were "a significant number of rounds" fired in an exchange that lasted less than a minute, he said. Three officers, including the two who were wounded, shot back at Bedell. The officers were wearing bullet-proof vests and had minor injuries, with one grazed on the shoulder and the other in the thigh. The suspect had no body armor, Keevill said. "There is no indication at this point that there are any domestic or international terrorist" connections in the case, he said. He said Pentagon police had undergone elaborate training since the September 11 attacks and that security procedures had been reviewed recently after a shooting rampage in November at the Fort Hood army base in Texas. Keevill said he was "pleased" with how police responded to the attack and had no plans for an overhaul of security. "I'm not going to change the way we're doing business," he said. The Pentagon metro entrance remained closed as police were still "counting" the bullets and studying the crime scene, he added. After a hijacked plane slammed into the Pentagon in the September 11 attacks of 2001, the building was fortified and the metro exit rebuilt so it no longer connected directly to the Pentagon building entrance. Besides serving the Pentagon and its thousands of military and civilian employees, the station is a major transportation hub for bus services into suburban northern Virginia.
