Ahmad Afzali issued a tearful apology before the federal court in Brooklyn on Thursday. He was charged in September of willfully making false statements to the FBI in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism. Prosecutors say he alerted Najibullah Zazi about a federal investigation on the terror plot. Zazi, a Colorado resident of Afghan descent, pleaded guilty last week to conspiring to attack Manhattan's subway lines between Sept. 14 and Sept. 16, 2009. New York police had questioned Aafzali a few days before the planned suicide operation. They asked him about Zazi and other suspects using photos. Afzali, previously used as a source by police, told them that he recognized Zazi and some of the men. The imam later informed Zazi's father, Mohammed Zazi, in a phone call about the visit from authorities. Mohammed Zazi subsequently instructed his son to speak with Afzali "before anything else." During the conversation between father and son, Afzali called Najibullah Zazi and said, "I was exposed to something yesterday from law enforcement. And they came to ask me about your characters... our phone call is being monitored." Afzali's plea agreement reduces the maximum eight years in prison the original charge against him carried, to six months. After serving his sentence, he is required to leave the United States or face deportation back to Afghanistan. Zazi, 25, was arrested on Sept. 19 last year for lying to federal agents investigating a terror case. He was later charged with conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction. Zazi admitted that he and his associates left the United States in August 2008 for Pakistan, where they were recruited and trained by al Qaeda on how to make a bomb. He and the other suspects returned to the United States with the task of conducting suicide operations for al Qaeda. Upon returning, Zazi moved to Denver where he searched online for information on components of explosive devices and later bought materials to make triacetone triperoxide (TATP). He traveled to New York City and met with associates, intending to assemble the bomb on the weekend before the planned attack. Zazi's associates, Zarein Ahmedzay and Adis Medunjanin, were charged last Thursday with conspiring in the terror plot, which the Justice Department has called one of the most serious threats to the nation since 9/11.
