Sanford Sues To Block $350 Million In Stimulus Money May 21, 2009 1:20 p.m. EST --- Advertisment --- Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Columbia, SC (AHN) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has filed a lawsuit in response to votes from the state legislature on a budget that seeks to force him to accept $350 million in federal economic recovery funds. The Republican governor is refusing stimulus cash after being denied by the White House the permission to use these to pay off state debts. Sanford filed his suit Wednesday night after the state legislature overrode his veto of the state's $5.7 billion budget. "Our hand has been forced on this front," the governor said in a statement. "If a legislature in this state or any other has the ability to arbitrarily change the terms of federal law, then why even have governors? This is ultimately about protecting not just this generation of taxpayers but future generations as well, which is why we've pushed for putting stimulus money toward debt repayment." State Democratic Party chair Carol Fowler had urged the two Republican-controlled chambers of the legislature to override the vetoes. "Gov. Sanford is clearly oblivious to the fact that our state has been hit hard by both the recession and his long-term failure to bring jobs to South Carolina. He needs to allow lawmakers to use these funds for their intended purpose instead of making them the platform for his presidential bid," she said. The 48-year-old Sanford had written President Barack Obama twice in March to ask that he be allowed to use $700 million of the $2.8 billion for South Carolina to pay off state debts. Office of Budget and Management (OMB) director Peter Orszag, responding for the President, had rejected him both times, saying Congress has not authorized the administration to waive any of the rules governing the implementation of the stimulus, or American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
