Surviving British conjoined twin dies: hospital
AFP - Saturday, December 27
LONDON (AFP) - - A month-old baby girl who survived highly risky surgery to separate her from her conjoined twin has died, the London hospital where she was treated said Friday.
Faith Williams died Thursday "from the complexities of her condition", said a spokesman for Great Ormond Street Hospital for children.
She was separated from her smaller sister Hope in an 11-hour operation on December 2.
Hope died soon afterwards, as her lungs were unable to support her breathing, but Faith was given a 50 percent chance of survival. However, doctors said after the surgery that she was "very sick".
"She required the full range of skills of our intensive care staff, and underwent a number of further procedures. However, she succumbed to the complexities of her condition," the hospital spokesman said.
The sisters were born by Caesarian section on November 26, joined from the breastbone to the top of the navel. They shared their blood circulation but had their own organs, though they were joined at the liver and intestines.
Their mother, 18-year-old Laura Williams, is Britain's youngest ever mother of conjoined twins, which are usually born to women aged 25 to 40.
