Houston, Texas, United States (AHN) - Two southern cities will inaugurate new mayors on Monday as the nation returns back to work after the holidays. In Atlanta, Kasim Reed will take the oath after he won one of the closest races in the city's history, while in Houston, Annise Parker will begin her term as the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city.
Parker will be sworn in by U.S. District Judge Vanessa Gilmore during a morning ceremony at Wortham Theater Center. She performs her first official act as Houston's chief executive immediately after, presiding over the oath-taking of the 14 members of the city council.
The 53-year-old served as the city controller for five years before winning the nonpartisan mayoral race. She failed to gain majority of the votes in the November election, but won the runoff, 53 percent to 47 percent, against former City Attorney Gene Locke the next month. Her victory, in a state that had banned same-sex marriages only four years ago, was celebrated by gay advocates nationwide.
A public concert funded by the 2010 Inaugural Committee will be held at Discovery Green after Parker's oath-taking.
Atlanta also inaugurates its 59th mayor, beginning with a prayer service for all faiths at the Ben Hill United Methodist Church. Reed takes his oath together with other newly-elected officials in a noon ceremony at the Atlanta Civic Center. A citizen's reception will be held in the evening at city hall.
Reed, former vice chairman of the state Senate Democratic Caucus, won the Dec. 1 runoff against councilwoman Mary Norwood, who was seeking to become the first white woman mayor of Atlanta, and the first white mayor in 36 years. Reed's victory in the nonpartisan race was confirmed by a recount conducted upon the request of Norwood because the margin of votes between them was less than one percent.
