KARACHI, Jan 4 - Following is a list of events in Pakistan as well as news stories and press reports which may influence financial markets.

* Five young Americans detained in Pakistan after contacting militant groups through the Internet are expected to be charged for planning terrorist attacks.
* President Asif Ali Zardari to lay the foundation stone for the Mohatta Palace Museum Cultural Complex in Karachi.
MARKET SNAPSHOTS
* In the currency market, the rupee closed at 84.23/84.33 versus the dollar on Saturday. Friday was a bank holiday.
The rupee weakened 6.04 percent in 2009 year after losing 22.12 percent in 2008.
* Pakistan's benchmark Karachi Stock Exchange 100-share index <.KSE> ended down 121.03 points, or 1.27 percent, at 9,386.92 in thin trade on Thursday. The market was closed on Friday due to security concerns.
* The cut-off yield on Pakistan's benchmark 6-month treasury bills fell to 12.1009 percent at an auction on Wednesday from 12.2351 on Dec. 16, the central bank said. [ID:nSGE5BT07K]
* The net inflow of foreign investment in the stock market was $1.8 million on Thursday.

* U.S. stocks ended 2009 on Thursday with their best gains since 2003, driven by optimism about the economy's recovery and a brighter outlook for profits.
The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 23.5 percent for the year, while the Dow climbed 18.8 percent and the Nasdaq jumped 43.9 percent from its close on Dec. 31, 2008. [.N]
* Oil rose toward $80 a barrel amid thin trading volumes on Monday, the first trading day of 2010, partly supported by news that Russia had halted oil supplies to Belarussian refineries.
U.S. crude for February delivery <CLc1> rose 59 cents to $79.95 a barrel by 0121 GMT. London Brent crude <LCOc1> rose 61 cents to $78.54. [O/R]
* Gold prices traded narrowly around $1,095 an ounce on Monday in a cautious start to the year after ending 2009 with their biggest absolute annual gain in three decades.
Spot gold <XAU=> stood at $1,093.15 an ounce as of 0012 GMT, down 0.3 percent from New York's notional close of $1,096.35 after earlier rising to as high as $1,099.75. [GOL/]
