Credit: Reuters/Courtesy of Nintendo/Handout By Liana B. Baker and Isabel Reynolds LOS ANGELES | Tue Jun 7, 2011 3:45pm EDT LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Nintendo took the wraps off a high-definition version of its hit Wii, adding a touchscreen to its controller and more bells and whistles to appeal to hardcore gamers. Early reviews of the Wii U were mixed to positive, with analysts saying the device fell short of being game-changing. But some liked the innovation in the 6.2-inch controller, a device slightly larger than Apple Inc's iPhone with a touchscreen and video-call capability and adding buttons and functions that may appeal to gamers who play longer and more intensely. The new device will go on sale between April and December 2012, the company told reporters in Los Angeles. The company did not say how much it would cost. "The controller is a breakthrough," said Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. "Overall, Wii U looks good, but I have to say I wasn't blown away. "Hopefully they will price it at $299 and not more. My guess is the extra controller will cost $99." Bhatia added that the first games available for the Wii U should be modified versions of ones already available for Sony's and Microsoft's consoles. The initial game line-up announced at the E3 videogame show on Tuesday suggest Nintendo is trying to woo hardcore gamers back to the fold, with popular first-person shooters such as Ubisoft's Ghost Recon, Sega's Aliens and Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3 on the slate. Nintendo had ceded so-called hardcore gamers to rivals in past years. "There are so many developers already responding to creating new games for the videogame system we are proposing with Wii U," said Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata. "It can satisfy all tastes with deeper gameplay actions." With more than a year to market, however, Nintendo could still make further modifications to the Wii U, and the game slate may also change. "It's smart for a number of reasons. There are two levels of interface, the touchscreen for casual gamers and the buttons for more core types," said Ricardo Torres, editor-in-chief for popular games site gamespot.com. "They have a lot of games core gamers care about." "It's like a sandbox for developers. It's up to them to decide the experience that works best." PRESSURE IS ON Nintendo's Wii took the industry by storm when it was launched in November 2006, bringing motion control to the market. Whether the company's latest gadget can win over a notoriously fickle gamer community remains to be seen. But the move exerts pressure on rivals like Microsoft Corp and Sony Corp to come up with new game systems, and could jumpstart a $65 billion market that surpasses Hollywood in size. Nintendo retains a leading market share in gaming hardware but is struggling to win users from Microsoft and Sony after the disappointing introduction of its 3DS handheld device. For a graphic The new console is the first Nintendo device to support HD graphics. The controller's 6.2-inch touchscreen works like a second display. The smaller screen can show the same images that are on the big TV screen or can provide gamers with additional information, giving them an edge over competitors. The Wii U's controller can also be used to make voice calls and run old Nintendo games. It has motion-sensor capabilities and works in conjunction with existing Wii controllers, the company said. With its array of buttons, the device could appeal to hardcore gamers who could use it for first-person shooter games. The device also acts as a standalone gaming gadget -- it can, for instance, continue running a game on the touchscreen while someone else watches TV. Wii U is the first new home console in five years. Sony began selling its PlayStation 3 home console in November 2006 while Microsoft's Xbox 360 console became available in November 2005. Both consoles have sold steadily, and neither hardware maker has revealed immediate plans for new systems.
