At 37, Paul Simon's son makes his musical mark
NEW YORK - Having suffered more than 15 years of false starts, failures and musical disappointments, singer-songwriter Harper Simon admits he has hardly charted the ideal path to pop stardom like his father, Paul Simon. The young Simon had always shown musical promise. At age 4 he sang with his dad on the "Sesame Street" children's TV show. He also attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Now, at 37, the son of one of America's best known singer-songwriters has finally released his first album.
Composer Lloyd Webber has prostate cancer: BBC
LONDON - British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, the BBC reported on Sunday. The broadcaster quoted a statement from the 61-year-old's spokesman as saying the condition had been caught in its very early stages.
Ex-Smiths singer Morrissey stable after collapsing on stage
LONDON - Morrissey, the former singer in the British band The Smiths, is in a stable condition after collapsing on stage, a hospital spokeswoman said on Sunday. The 50-year-old was taken to a Swindon hospital after suffering breathing difficulties on Saturday during a gig in the southern England town.
Sony looks for box office hit with "This Is It"
LOS ANGELES - Heading toward its October 28 release, Michael Jackson movie "This Is It" looks like a box office winner for Sony's Columbia Pictures movie studio with one estimate saying it could make more than $600 million worldwide in a limited two-week run. Jackson's many fans are hungry for one last chance to see their idol sing and dance on screen, and the film's makers promise an image of him that is more like the pop star who ruled the charts in the 1980s, and less like the frail paparazzi target he seemed in recent years.
Justin Timberlake gets stay away order against woman
LOS ANGELES - A judge on Friday granted Grammy award-winning singer Justin Timberlake a temporary restraining order against a woman he said was "an obsessed, mentally unstable stalker" who broke into his home. In documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the "SexyBack" singer said Karen McNeil, 48, trespassed onto his gated Los Angeles home on Thursday and was turned away at the door by his security guards, who called police.
Polanski could face two years prison if extradited
ZURICH - Film director Roman Polanski could face two years in prison if extradited to the United States after fleeing sentencing in California on child sex charges in 1978, the Swiss justice ministry said. "The United States want him to be extradited for sexual intercourse with a minor. This carries a maximum sentence of two years under U.S. law," justice ministry spokesman Folco Galli said on Friday.
Taylor Swift first U.S. tour dates sell in minutes
LOS ANGELES - Tickets to four of country singer Taylor Swift's 2010 tour dates sold out in two minutes after going on sale on Friday, her publicists said. All tickets released on Friday for 15 U.S. shows in the 19 year-old singer's 2010 Fearless tour sold "within minutes". The four shows in the New York area were the fastest to go, her representatives said.
Hip-hop band the Roots branch out on nightly TV
NEW YORK - For the past seven months, Questlove has been on the run. The Roots drummer, whose driver's license reads "Ahmir Thompson," wakes up every day between 6 and 7 a.m. to catch an 8 a.m. train from his hometown of Philadelphia and usually doesn't return home until 11 p.m. That's because at the beginning of the year, the hip-hop group accepted a job as the house band for "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," which premiered in March on NBC.
Rapper Kanye West cleared in airport scuffle
LOS ANGELES - A judge on Friday cleared rapper Kanye West of criminal charges following a scuffle with paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport last year, pending his completion of community service, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney said. Grammy award-winning West, who has often captured media attention with public outbursts, and his manager were charged in March with battery, theft and vandalism following the September 11, 2008 confrontation with a photographer.
Billboard singles reviews: Norah Jones, Timbaland
NEW YORK . The lyrics are somewhat obscure but still manage to achieve a winning simplicity, as Jones sings of her preoccupied dream state. While her jazzy, piano-driven hits have always been rich in songwriting and arrangement, Jones' experimentation with tempo and instrumentation on her new material is a welcome one. ARTIST: TIMBALAND
