A 'middle finger' protest that works

Mumbai (The Statesman/ANN) - Four years ago director Michael Winterbottom set out to make a movie of the Daniel Pearl case and came out with A Mighty Heart that had the feel of a documentary. Instead of giving the Jessica Lall case the same treatment, Indian director Rajkumar Gupta has produced a movie that has the spark of a thriller, the intelligence of his debut venture Aamir and the heart of a Bollywood number.
Gupta doesn't pretend that No One Killed Jessica is not a product of Bollywood. What makes this a potent movie is the accurate nature of the exposition; but at the same time Gupta's hesitance to name names robs the script of its sheen.
The director had a difficult task at hand - narrating a twice-told tale with a sense of urgency. And this is what Meera Gaity (Rani Mukherji) does. More than simply being a foul-mouthed, puff-a-minute journalist, she becomes the narrator of the actual story. The confidence with which she tackles false leads, rumours and details is infectious and complements the rapid-fire editing. Keeping her in check is Vidya Balan as Sabrina Lall and her down-in-the-dumps look combine with the oversized designs from Sabyasachi Mukherjee. And this is where lies a flaw - authenticity of emotions. The protagonists are at times more sappy than intriguing.
The movie, in fact, has nothing new to tell about the Jessica Lall case. It's more about highlighting one task journalists are responsible for - generating public opinion. Halla Bol, which also featured Vidya Balan, touched on the Jessica Lall story (besides many other important issues) but in 2008 the case was far from over.
Lending the movie freshness is the backdrop - Delhi and its vibrant nightlife. This is a city that houses politicians with hearts of stone. Without wasting time, Gupta cuts to the chase with Sabrina Lall waking up to receive bad news - her sister has been shot for refusing to serve drinks to a politician's son at a trendy joint. Manish Bharadwaj (played by Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) gets away. Meera represents the media and the role it had to play in reopening the case and putting the culprits in the dock. When a lower court acquits the killer, she gets interested in the case and a sting operation (Middle Finger Protest) follows. Everybody knows how the story ends.
Despite the fact that No One Killed Jessica will be seen as an attempt to turn a buck on a tragedy, Gupta makes a brave attempt at portraying an original story. Adding to his list of trademark techniques that made Aamir worthwhile, especially the use of hidden cameras, is the balance of bright and natural lighting and in-your-face dialogues. Also working in his favour is the choice of story. The Jessica Lall case has all the ingredients of a potboiler Bollywood movie - entertainment, politicians, murder and justice. The sluggish first half gives way to a very entertaining second part. Holding it all together is a thumping soundtrack (Amit Trivedi) that cannot be enjoyed in isolation.
Viewers will feel reassured in Rani Mukherji's acting. In the last few years, Yash Raj Films had sucked life out of her acting but Gupta allows her to recover lost ground. Always on the move, dressed casually, her smoky voice constantly lashes out. Her character is no saint and this vulnerability adds life to the movie. The Sabrina we see is not the one from 1999; circumstances have toughened her. And this is what Vidya Balan was required to portray. Only at the end can she breathe a sigh of relief and be at peace with herself. Also well portrayed are the lesser mortals who are controlled by politicians... They want to speak up but they too are victims of our political set-up.
Had the first half been 20-odd minutes shorter and pumped with fewer sappy dialogues, it would have been perfect. Also marring the film are minor mistakes - the ticker on a television news channel shows (in the first half) 1996 while Lall was murdered in 1999, Sabrina's father is stuck in a hospital for too long after suffering a cardiac arrest and the meetings between Rani and Vidya are very short (and to an extent insipid).
All said, No One Killed Jessica is a moving piece of cinema in a garb designed in Bollywood.
