Supreme Court won't review music download antitrust case
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday declined to review a ruling that reinstated an antitrust lawsuit alleging major record labels conspired to fix prices and terms under which music would be sold over the Internet. The justices rejected without comment an appeal by a number of companies that included Sony Corp <6758.T>, a unit of Vivendi SA <VIV.PA>, Warner Music Group Corp <WMG.N> and EMI Group of the ruling by a U.S. appeals Court in New York.
Microsoft shake-up continues, server unit head out
SEATTLE - Chief Executive Steve Ballmer has ousted the head of Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> third-largest unit, marking the latest in a series of high-level departures as the software company tries to regain its leadership in the technology sector. Overtaken by Apple Inc <AAPL.O> as the world's most valuable tech company last year and stung by a stagnant stock price for the last decade, Microsoft has been shaking up its top leadership for several years.
BlackBerry maker to block porn in Indonesia
JAKARTA - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> <RIMM.O> said on Monday it will filter pornographic Internet content for its BlackBerry smartphone users in Indonesia, following government pressure to restrict access to porn sites or face its browsing service being shut down. The Canadian company has been buffeted by demands for access to its encrypted data from numerous countries worried about security and social mores, including India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Nintendo to ship 1.5 million 3DS in Japan: report
TOKYO - Nintendo Co <7974.OS> plans to ship about 1.5 million units of the 3D-capable handheld game players in Japan in the first month after its launch on February 26, President Satoru Iwata said in an interview with the Nikkei business daily published on Monday. "It's important that we ensure a continuous supply," Iwata was quoted as saying by the Nikkei.
Disney and Yahoo in internet TV content talks: report
- Walt Disney Co <DIS.N> is in discussions on allowing content from some of its television networks to be available on sets embedded with Yahoo Inc's <YHOO.O> Internet-TV software, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter. Disney is looking to create widgets for its ESPN, ABC, and Disney networks that would pipe content to Yahoo-connected TV sets and these widgets would be free to consumers, the paper added.
Blackberry maker says will filter porn to meet Indonesia rules
JAKARTA - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> said on Monday it will filter pornographic internet content for its Blackberry smartphone users in Indonesia, following government pressure to stop access to porn sites or face its browsing service being shut down. Indonesia, home to about 2 million Blackberry users, has also asked RIM to open a local server, part of demands by a number of countries to gain access to its encrypted data.
Analysis: TV makers fumble towards the future
LAS VEGAS - Electronics makers are covering all bases as they rush headlong into a "smart" TV market deemed the next stage of evolution, trying to figure out just what will catch on with consumers using increasingly sophisticated displays in living rooms. From the industry's giants -- Samsung <005930.KS>, Sony Corp <6758.T>, LG <066570.KS>, Panasonic <6752.T> -- to upstarts like Vizio, tech manufacturers fell over themselves to tout the latest versions of their connected televisions at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week.
Verizon Wireless to unveil iPhone Tuesday: source
NEW YORK - Verizon Wireless, the top U.S. mobile provider, plans on Tuesday to unveil a version of the Apple Inc <AAPL.O> iPhone for its service and will kick off sales of the device a few weeks later, a source told Reuters. Verizon Wireless will offer the iPhone to its customers under its existing wireless service price plans, said the source, who asked not to be named as the plan has not yet been announced.
Apple CEO Jobs takes $1 for 2010 compensation
CHICAGO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Chief Executive Steve Jobs earned another $1 in salary 2010, the technology company said in a regulatory filing on Friday. Jobs has received annual compensation from Apple of only $1 since 1997. He owns $5.5 million shares of Apple common stock. Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976.
Verizon to carry iPhone: source
NEW YORK - Verizon Wireless will sell the iPhone, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing a person familiar with the matter. There was no specific date for when Verizon would sell the phone in its stores, the paper reported on its website. The announcement will be made on Tuesday at an event in New York, WSJ said.
