To date, Microsoft's effort to address the digital music market has largely focused on its Zune player and Zune Pass subscription service, which have won favorable reviews but few customers. But with the recent unveiling of its Windows Phone 7 Series operating system at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, Microsoft hopes to reboot its struggling digital music strategy. China school denies link to Google attack: report SHANGHAI - A Chinese vocational school has denied a report it was a source of recent cyber attacks on Internet giant Google and other U.S. corporations, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday. "Investigation in the staff found no trace the attacks originated from our school," Li Zixiang, party chief at Lanxiang Vocational School in Shandong Province, was quoted as saying. The Internet will make you smarter, say experts LOS ANGELES - An online survey of 895 Web users and experts found more than three-quarters believe the Internet will make people smarter in the next 10 years, according to results released on Friday. Most of the respondents also said the Internet would improve reading and writing by 2020, according to the study, conducted by the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University in North Carolina and the Pew Internet and American Life project. U.S. agency says Google can be power marketer WASHINGTON on Thursday approved Google's request to purchase electricity and resell it to wholesale customers. Computer jargon baffles users, hinders security BRUSSELS - Computer jargon, a "tick box" culture and unimaginative advertising are discouraging Internet users from learning how to protect themselves online. Faced with such gobbledegook, many of the world's nearly 2 billion Internet users conclude that security is for "experts" and fail to take responsibility for the security of their own patch of cyberspace -- a potentially costly mistake. Microsoft steps up search assault on Google SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> assault on search engine leader Google Inc <GOOG.O> took a major step forward on Thursday as U.S. and European regulators cleared the software company's search partnership with Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O>. The 10-year deal, struck last July, is the biggest effort yet by Microsoft to establish an online business to rival Google, an area where Microsoft has lost $5 billion over the last four years. ITC to investigate Apple complaint vs Nokia SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. International Trade Commission said on Friday it has agreed to investigate Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> patent infringement complaint against Nokia Oyj <NOK1V.HE>, as the legal battle between the two technology heavyweights continues to play out. The companies have been locked in a legal tussle since last October, when Nokia sued Apple and said the iPhone maker was using its patented technologies without paying for them. Google's books plan hailed, reviled; no ruling NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> was lauded as a visionary intent on spreading the world's knowledge and reviled as a copyright infringer cavalier about protecting users' privacy in a hearing on Thursday to discuss its plan to digitize millions of books. Under the terms of the proposed settlement of a 2005 lawsuit brought by the Authors Guild, Google would pay $125 million to create a book rights registry, where authors and publishers would register works and be paid for books and other publications the search giant puts online. Social networking, govt sites hacked in global attack - A new type of computer virus is known to have breached almost 75,000 computers in 2,500 organizations around the world, including user accounts of popular social network websites, according Internet security firm NetWitness. The latest virus -- known as "Kneber botnet" -- gathers login credentials to online financial systems, social networking sites and email systems from infested computers and reports the information back to hackers, NetWitness said in a statement. FCC expands broadband access at schools WASHINGTON - The Federal Communications Commission voted to expand a school program that is likely to help increase Americans' access to high-speed Internet, a major goal of the upcoming National Broadband Plan. The program, called E-rate, funds schools' connectivity to the Internet under the $8 billion Universal Service Fund, a U.S. subsidy program for low-income families to gain access to phone service as well as for education and health services.
