Sean Penn charged in clash with LA photographer
LOS ANGELES - Oscar-winner Sean Penn, as infamous for problems with paparazzi as he is famous for acting, has been charged with two crimes after a run-in with a photographer last year and could face jail time if convicted, Los Angeles prosecutors said on Friday. Penn, 49, was charged with misdemeanor battery and vandalism after allegedly kicking a photographer in the leg and breaking his camera last October at an upscale shopping center in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, the city attorney's office said.
Michael Jackson's dad gets access to medical record
LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles judge ruled on Friday that Michael Jackson's father can have access to a portion of the dead pop star's medical records, which might be used in a possible wrongful death lawsuit. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff said Joe Jackson can hire a medical expert to review records from the hospital where his pop singer son was taken after suffering cardiac arrest due to a drug overdose in June last year.
Too much technology hampered 9/11 security: film
BERLIN - A documentary that explores gaps in U.S. security from the point of view of a whistleblower who had spotted problems before the 9/11 attacks made its debut on Friday at the Berlin film festival. "S.O.S./State of Security" follows the travails of former White House security adviser Richard Clarke, depicted as a Kennedy-era idealist whose cries went unheeded.
Depardieu charms as anti-hero in French tragi-comedy
BERLIN - French veteran Gerard Depardieu charmed audiences in his latest film "Mammuth" with his depiction of a lumbering, hairy anti-hero who re-discovers the poetry in life after retiring. In the tragi-comic French movie, which premiered at the Berlin film festival on Friday, Mammuth retires from his job in a slaughterhouse but needs to gather the necessary paperwork from former employers to be able to claim his pension.
FCC looking at pulled Fox game show: report
NEW YORK - The Federal Communications Commission is looking into allegations that producers of a Fox game show that never aired fed answers to potential contestants before taping the show last year, the New York Times reported on Friday. The newspaper cited a letter about the show, called "Our Little Genius" that the commission released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The quiz show, which featured contestants between the ages of 6 and 12, was pulled from Fox before its premiere in early January, according to the Times.
Lloyd Webber interested in buying Abbey Road studios
LONDON - British musical theater impresario Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is "very interested" in buying London's Abbey Road recording studios, made famous by the Beatles, his spokesman said on Friday. Iggy Pop and Stooges prepare for "Power" play
DETROIT - For Iggy Pop and the current incarnation of the Stooges, plans involve "a three-year cycle" that will include the expanded re-release of 1973's seminal "Raw Power" album, touring and likely some new recording. "We'll give it a good, sharp poke for the next three years and then step back and see where we are, see what we can do with it after that," Pop told Billboard.com. "After that we should step back and pick our shots once in a while," he said of the proto-punk rock band, which is about to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Hopefully we can be like something that convenes for certain occasions."
Lady Gaga tops Cowell's "Idol" mentor wish list
LOS ANGELES - "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell said on Thursday he would like to have glam singer Lady Gaga as a mentor this year to the aspiring pop stars on the top-rated TV talent show. And Cowell said the number one requirement for his replacement as a judge next year was solid music industry experience, which would seem to rule out American shock jock Howard Stern who has been lobbying hard for the coveted job on his Sirius XM radio show.
