ADVERTISEMENT The killing of a policeman dashed hopes that weekend deaths of two British soldiers was a one-off, threatening to plunge Northern Ireland back into the sectarian violence which wracked the province for 30 years. "As long as there is British involvement in Ireland, these attacks will continue," Continuity IRA said in a coded message claiming to have killed the policeman Monday night, two days after two soldiers were shot dead. The policeman, named as Stephen Paul Carroll, 48, was shot in the head in an area known to be home to nationalist republican supporters in Craigavon, 20 miles (30 kilometres) southwest of Belfast, police said. On Saturday night, two soldiers were killed at the Massereene barracks northwest of Belfast, in an attack claimed by another dissident republican group, the Real IRA. The soldiers were the first killed in Northern Ireland for 12 years, while Carroll was the first policeman to be killed since the Police Service of Northern Ireland took over from the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 2001. Reacting to the shooting, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown vowed that Northern Ireland would not see a return of the so-called Troubles , which killed over 3,500 people until the landmark 1998 Good Friday agreement. "There will be no return to the old days," he said. Political leaders vowed that the violence would not prevent Catholics and Protestants from sharing power. Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson said he was "sickened" by the attacks. Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen called the latest killing a "despicable murder, adding: "The people and all of their democratic representatives reject this violence and will overcome the evil and unrepresentative minority who want to drag us back to the past." "We are staring into the abyss and I would appeal to people to pull back," Dolores Kelly, a nationalist SDLP lawmaker and member of the Northern Ireland policing board, was quoted as saying by Sky News television. Britain's Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward said the attack on the policeman was a "desperate" but futile attempt to stop power-sharing. "The politics is working in Northern Ireland, we've got a power-sharing executive and this small group of criminals... refuse to accept the changes that are happening," he told Sky News. Local political sources told AFP the officer was shot following a callout to an incident near the area which is known to be a hotbed of republicanism. Two police cars raced to the scene and when officers stepped out of one of the vehicles, gunmen who were lying in wait opened fire. After the attack, police armed with machine guns patrolled the scene and helicopters swept over the area as the hunt began for the perpetrators. Continuity IRA and the The Real IRA are splinter groups of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which has laid down its arms and was the military wing of Sinn Fein, which now shares power with former foes the Democratic Unionists (DUP) in Belfast. The Real IRA was behind Northern Ireland's most deadly attack, the 1998 Omagh bombing which killed 29 people. The latest upsurge of violence has prompted politicians to insist that Northern Ireland's devolved power-sharing government, put in place in 2007 after the accord, will not be thrown off course. Republicans want Northern Ireland to leave the United Kingdom and join the Republic of Ireland to the south, while unionists want to keep ties with Britain. Robinson, of the DUP, called the latest shooting an "evil deed". "I am sickened at the attempts by terrorists to destabilise Northern Ireland," he said. "Those responsible for this murderous act will not be allowed to drag our province back to the past."
