Reuters - Tuesday, March 10
Nokia takes on Apple in online software "arms race"
HELSINKI - Nokia Oyj <NOK1V.HE> is betting a wider and more tailored offering of media and software for its phones will prove attractive when its Ovi online store opens in May and goes head-to-head with Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> App Store. The Apple store has proved the market for software supermarkets in the mobile world, with more than 500 million applications downloaded in only half a year.
YouTube to block music videos for UK users
NEW YORK - Google Inc's <GOOG.O> online video site, YouTube, said on Monday it will block all music videos to British users after it was unable to reach a rights deal with the main songwriters' collection society. The world's largest video sharing site said PRS for Music, a British collection society that collects royalties on behalf of nearly 50,000 composers, was asking it to pay "many, many times" more than the previous licensing agreement that has expired.
Microsoft's new system easier for browser switch
NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is developing a feature in its new operating system that allows users to turn off Internet Explorer and other key Microsoft programs. The new feature is a major step for the world's largest software company, which has been accused by competitors and regulators of forcing consumers to run its own software, squeezing rivals' offerings out of the marketplace.
Palm moves to bolster capital ahead of Pre launch
NEW YORK - Palm Inc <PALM.O> will exercise its right to remarket shares held by private equity firm Elevation Partners, in an attempt to bolster its capital ahead of the launch of its new Pre smartphone. The company said on Monday it would remarket 18.5 million common shares that underlie preferred shares and warrant units held by Elevation Partners. Based on current market prices, the shares are worth about $105 million.
Inventor says Google settles patent claim
LONDON - Google has agreed to settle an intellectual property claim brought by serial inventor Judah Klausner, who has won settlements in the past from Apple, Skype and LG Electronics, Klausner said on Monday. The dispute concerned patents that Klausner holds covering so-called visual voicemail, which makes voicemail work more like email by sending visual alerts of voice messages to computers or phones, allowing users to selectively retrieve the messages.
Cisco to unveil data center strategy next Monday
NEW YORK - Cisco Systems Inc <CSCO.O> said it will unveil next week a new strategy to help customers build more efficient data centers, amid expectations for the network equipment maker to announce it will start selling servers. Media reports have said that Cisco plans to sell computer servers equipped with virtualization software by VMWare Inc <VMW.N>, a move that could position Cisco into more competition with Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> and IBM <IBM.N>.
Ad industry confronts grim research on spending
NEW YORK - An advertising industry that has witnessed consumers abandon vacations, quit shopping and drop cable TV subscription should be prepared for such dramatic shifts in spending to stick around for awhile -- even after worldwide economies recover. So cautions Nick Brien, a senior executive of advertising giant Interpublic Group <IPG.N>, who predicted the sharp pullback in consumer spending would force companies to adjust by cutting global advertising expenditures by 10 to 15 percent this year.
Internet seen a growing weapon in Asian radicalization
SYDNEY - Extremist groups in Southeast Asia are increasingly using the internet and social networking to radicalize the youth of the region, said a new security report released Friday. Internet usage in Southeast Asia has exploded since 2000 and extremist groups have developed a sophisticated online presence, including professional media units.
German court fines man $2,300 for SMS message
BERLIN for inadvertently passing on an SMS text message which told the recipient they had just killed a Turk by opening it, his lawyer said Friday. Shortly before Germany defeated Turkey in last year's Euro 2008 soccer tournament, the 28-year-old sent a message that in German read "by opening this SMS, you have killed a Turk."
China Mobile in talks with Taiwan firms on roaming services
BEIJING - China Mobile <0941.HK>, the world's largest mobile carrier, is in talks with Taiwan's three major mobile phone network operators to cooperate on roaming services, chairman Wang Jianzhou said on Monday. Wang said talks had been held with Chunghwa Telecom <2412.TW>, Taiwan mobile <3045.TW> and Far EasTone Telecommunications <4904.TW> about potential cooperative arrangements.
