ADVERTISEMENT About 12,000 U.S. soldiers will leave Iraq by September, officials said Sunday. "What we have right now is what we plan on having for the foreseeable future," Lt. Gen. Lloyd Austin said in a video news conference from Baghdad. "It will depend on whether security trends continue to improve or whether things begin to take a turn in the other direction, but I'm fairly confident that we'll be able to maintain what we have," Austin said. Sunday's withdrawal announcement came hours after a Baghdad suicide bomber killed about 30 people. The withdrawals, which will most likely come from Baghdad and Anbar province, once main battlefields, are the first step in fulfilling President Barack Obama's pledge to end America's role in the war. That would bring U.S. troop levels to more than 120,000. As part of the drawdown, the U.S. will turn over 74 facilities and areas under its control to the Iraqis by the end of March. All 4,000 British soldiers remaining in Iraq are also scheduled to leave by September. Austin echoed other U.S. commanders in describing the improvement and expansion of Iraq's armed forces and in saying that violence is way down. "There are always a number of things that could cause us problems," Austin said, pointing in particular to the volatile Mosul and Diyala areas. "We are close to sustainable security, but we're not there yet," Austin said. Obama plans to leave most U.S. combat forces in Iraq through this year to help ensure that national elections do not produce fresh sectarian violence.
