The Nov. 24 event is intended to protest Transportation Security Administration procedures that include pat-downs of airline passengers’ genital areas and use of body scanners that project their nude images onto video screens. The organizers are asking airline passengers to “opt-out” of the body scanners to force TSA inspectors to do pat-downs on everyone, thereby slowing airplane boardings and disrupting flight schedules. “The goal of National Opt-Out Day is to send a message to our lawmakers that we demand change,” the Association for Airline Passenger Rights, an advocacy group for passengers, said in a statement. “We have a right to privacy and buying a plane ticket should not mean that we’re guilty until proven innocent.” The protest is part of a tide of resentment about the screening procedures that was discussed during a Senate hearing Wednesday. TSA Administrator John S. Pistole defended aggressive screening techniques as an unfortunate but necessary means of protecting airlines from terrorist attacks. The protests are planned at 11 U.S. airports, including New York’s JFK, Dallas, Denver and Phoenix, which are among the nation’s most heavily traveled. About 24 million people are expected to fly during the Thanksgiving holiday season, which begins Thursday. Among groups that have protested the aggressive screening tactics are the Consumer Federation of America, the Consumer Travel Alliance and labor unions representing airline employees. The effect of the new airport screening techniques on other transportation modes has not yet been measured exactly but is providing an “anecdotal” benefit to Amtrak, according to a spokesman for the national passenger railroad. In other words, some passengers reportedly are switching to train travel to avoid the intrusions of airline security. “Certainly over the last year our ridership has grown, setting an all-time record,” said Marc Magliari, Amtrak spokesman. Amtrak plans to add trains to its routes next week when the number of riders is expected to reach 127,000 on Wednesday, making it the biggest travel day of the year. Wednesday, Nov. 24, also is National Opt-Out Day. Amtrak carried a record 686,000 passengers during the 12-day Thanksgiving holiday season last year. Amtrak passengers at Union Station in Washington, D.C., on Thursday of this week seemed largely unconcerned about airport screening techniques. Amtrak searches passengers only when security personnel detect a threat from one of them. “They don’t bother me,” said Maryann Arlt, a Bridgewater, N.J., attorney as she boarded a train. She was referring to airport pat-down searches and body scanning equipment. She also said the aggressive airport searches played no role in her decision to ride the train instead of fly. A man who stood in the same train station line, but asked not to be identified, said, “I’m indifferent. They protect everybody.” Some members of Congress are not indifferent. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) introduced a bill this week that would ban the airport pat-downs and body scanners.
