Demonstrators flock to Washington for comics' 'Sanity' rally
WASHINGTON (AFP) - – Tens of thousands of people streamed into the US capital for a rally hosted by liberal comics Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert that provided an antidote to the ugly political mood dividing America.
Three days before US mid-term elections, people traveled from around the country to clog Washington's streets and the National Mall to watch two of the best known US satirists join forces for the "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear."
The masses stretched from the steps of the Capitol building almost down to the National Monument, with people still pouring in nearly three hours after the event started at Saturday noon (1600 GMT).
"Wow," said one rallier as he walked down 7th Street towards the Mall. "All of America has come to Washington."
Though police declined to estimate the size of the sea of people, local radio station WTOP said there were likely 200,000 at the rally.
"It's chaotic but sane. There are a ton of diverse, happy people," said James Cuizon, who had traveled from Hawaii to attend the rally.
Many saw the rally as a liberal response to the ultra-conservative Tea Party movement, which has held events across America to oppose what it views as growing government intrusion into citizens' lives.
The right-wing movement has helped mobilize opposition to the policies of President Barack Obama, whose Democratic Party is expected to suffer severe losses to Republicans in Tuesday's legislative and gubernatorial elections.
Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck appalled liberals in August when he hosted a rally "to restore honor" on the anniversary and at the site, on the Mall, of civil rights leader Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
At least 80,000 people, many of them Tea Party members, turned out at Beck's rally to show their opposition to Obama and what they call his administration's big government or "socialist" policies.
"The Tea Party scares us. There's so much discrimination there," said Hala Ubaid, a young US-born Muslim woman wearing a veil and long dress who had come from New York with her husband and young son for Saturday's rally.
"I came to show support for the idea that we need to restore sanity and not be prejudiced and fearful about everything, including Muslims," she told AFP.
"This rally was a statement that people have taken things too far."
Many of the ralliers on Saturday carried signs that poked fun at the often inflammatory slogans seen at Tea Party rallies and other protests in the United States.
One read "God hates this sign," a dig at the Westboro church in Kansas that demonstrates outside military funerals with signs that read "God hates fags." Another said: "Every time Sarah Palin tweets, God kills a kitten."
"I don't think they realize how upset all of us moderates are," said Colleen Chmielewski, who drove nine hours from Buffalo, New York to attend the rally with her son and husband.
Colbert, whose popular show features him as a mock conservative host, took the stage by appearing inside a pod that resembled the capsule used to rescue the 33 miners trapped in Chile for a record 69 days underground.
He burst out and bounded across the stage in a red, white and blue Evel Knievel daredevil costume, and proceeded to lead the huge crowd in chants of "Chi Chi Chi! Le Le Le!"
Musicians Sheryl Crow, Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens), The Roots and Ozzy Osbourne performed for the crowds.
When Stewart took the microphone to close the rally, he urged politicians to work together instead of bickering and pleaded for an end to media portrayals of the United States as a country riven by irreconcilable differences.
"The image of Americans that is reflected back to us by the political and media process is false," Stewart said in a rare serious moment.
"We hear every damn day about how fragile our country is, how it's on the brink of catastrophe, about the polarizing hate and how it's a shame that we can't work together to get things done.
"The truth is we do work together to get things done every damn day. The only place we don't is here, or on cable TV, but Americans don't live here or on cable TV," he said, referring to Republican vote-blocking tactics in Congress and the messages of right-wing television and radio hosts.
One of the signs at the rally was a play on the Ghostbusters' movie theme song and the right-wing media shows. It said: "I ain't afraid of no hosts."
