Death toll rises to 20 in India boat sinking
KOLKATA (AFP) - – Indian navy vessels and fishermen searched on Sunday for scores of missing Muslim pilgrims after an overcrowded ferry capsized and sank, killing at least 20 people.
Four more bodies were pulled out of the fast-flowing river in the eastern state of West Bengal as hopes faded of finding more survivors from Saturday morning's disaster.
"We now have collected 20 bodies from the river which is wide and turbulent, and about 60 people are still missing," senior state police officer Surojit Karpurokayastha told AFP.
He said hundreds of angry relatives staged a demonstration on a jetty near where the tragedy took place, protesting that the rescue operation had been too slow.
The vessel, which was carrying around 150 people, capsized in a river in the Sundarbans mangrove forest, 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of Kolkata, the state capital of West Bengal.
It had capacity to carry just 60 people, officials said, but was badly overloaded. Many of the victims may have been swept away by the river.
The passengers, who were mainly farmers and fishermen, had been returning home after attending a Muslim religious event.
Naval fishing vessels, hovercraft and helicopters joined the rescue effort when the search resumed at dawn on Sunday, the Press Trust of India said, adding the victims were 15 women and five girls. One was just a year old.
It said the exact spot where the ferry sank had yet to be established.
"I only remember a big tide and then everything was blank. I had my son sitting beside me. But right now I don't know where he is," Ajmal Sheikh, 23, told the IANS news agency.
Some television news channels said that more than 100 people were missing after the sinking in the Muriganga River, close to the Bay of Bengal.
"I got married earlier this year," survivor Fatima Bibi said as she wept uncontrollably. "But I don't know whether my husband and my mother-in law are dead or alive."
Press reports said the boat had turned over after hitting a sandbank in rough conditions.
"The rescue has been slow as it is in a remote place," Sunderbans minister Kanti Ganguly said. "Strong current and fog hampered the operation. Hopes of finding the survivors are receding."
Fishermen plucked at least 60 passengers from the water after the accident, while others managed to swim to safety, police said.
Boat accidents are common in the South Asian subcontinent due to lax safety standards and overloading.
A similar ferry sinking occurred in the same river in September, leaving two dozen people dead.
