Some 430 South Koreans who crossed into the North on Saturday had private gatherings, ate lunch and talked for hours with 97 relatives from the North on Sunday, a day after their tearful first reunion in six decades. The reunions, which give divided families their first chance to see one another since the 1950-53 Korean War, take place at the Mount Kumgang resort on the North's southeastern coast, near the border. Television news footage on Saturday showed the participants -- many of them in their 80s -- crying and hugging each other, holding pictures of their families when they were young. There are no mail, telephone or email exchanges between ordinary citizens across the heavily fortified border. Many do not even know whether relatives on the other side of the border are alive or dead. Jeong Gi-Young, a 72-year-old South Korean, brought four pairs of shoes for her brother, Gi-Hyeong, whom she said had "been taken away in his bare feet" to the North when he was 19. The communist army took her brother with them as a porter when retreating to the North in 1950 from the family's home town of Anseong, now in South Korean territory. Gi-Young, her three other sisters and their parents had never seen or heard from him since then. "My mother always told me 'Even if I die without seeing him, you guys should meet him no matter what,'" Gi-Young said in tears. Both of her parents have died. "Now here we are, finally meeting each other," she said. Ko Bae-Il, a 62-year-old US citizen, flew to Seoul to meet his father, from whom he was separated at age three. "I will never let you go when I see your soul in the afterlife," Ko said in tears, holding his father's hands. About 80,000 elderly people in the South alone are desperate for a chance to see loved ones who live in the North, but officials say up to 4,000 of them die each year before getting the chance. Only about 20,800 family members have joined the reunions -- one fifth of these via video link -- since the programme began in earnest in 2000. The face-to-face reunions typically last three days. Following the Saturday to Monday meetings, another batch of 96 South Koreans will be reunited with 207 North Korean relatives from Wednesday to Friday at the same location. The emotional meetings, the first since September last year, come despite icy inter-Korean ties in the aftermath of the North's alleged torpedoing of a South Korean warship, for which the North angrily denies responsibility. Seoul last week rejected Pyongyang's offer to hold inter-Korea military talks, citing the North's refusal to acknowledge involvement in the deadly ship sinking. Just hours after the North vowed to retaliate against the rejection, North and South Korean troops on Friday briefly exchanged fire across the frontier, heightening tensions before November's G20 summit of world leaders in Seoul. Two bullets from the North hit the wall of a South Korean guard post on Friday evening and South Korean soldiers returned three shots. No South Koreans were hurt in the incident. The US-led United Nations Command (UNC) will soon open an investigation into the shooting to determine whether it violated the ceasefire agreement, the UNC spokesman said. "The investigation may start next week... but discussions are still under way regarding when to start exactly," he told AFP. The two Koreas are still technically at war after the 1950-1953 conflict ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty.
