The 24-year Canadian, who was captured in Afghanistan when he was 15, pleaded guilty Monday to murder in violation of the laws of war, providing material assistance to a terrorist organization and espionage. Khadr, who has already spent eight years at a prison camp at this US naval base, admitted his responsibility for hurling a grenade that killed sergeant Christopher Speer in Afghanistan in 2002 and told his widow that he was sorry. The military jury is now focusing on his possible punishment that theoretically could include life in prison. But in reality, according to military law, Khadr will serve the shorter of the two sentences -- one issued by the jury and one called for by his plea agreement with the US government. According to media reports, the plea agreement with prosecutors calls for him to serve eight more years in prison, seven of them in Canada, unless the seven-member military jury hands down a lesser sentence. With the plea deal, Khadr escapes a possible life prison term and the US government avoids a long and controversial trial of a detainee portrayed by his supporters as a child soldier. A high-level UN official wrote to the tribunal Monday, urging it not punish the man, arguing he was too young at the time sergeant Speer was killed. Military Judge Colonel Patrick Parrish suspended the trial Friday to allow the two sides to prepare their closing arguments before the jury begins its deliberations. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's conservative government has steadfastly refused to seek Khadr's repatriation despite criticism from opposition lawmakers. Ottawa on Monday would not comment on Khadr's guilty plea, describing it only as "a judicial procedure between Mr. Khadr and the American government." Born in Toronto to a family with strong ties to Al-Qaeda, Khadr last month celebrated his 24th birthday in his cell. His Egyptian-born father, who Omar Khadr reportedly said was part of Osama bin Laden's inner circle, was killed in a shootout in October 2003 with Pakistani forces. His sister Zaynab and brother Abdullah have been investigated for alleged ties to Al-Qaeda, and another brother, Abdurahman, has admitted on Canadian television that he and some of his siblings were trained by Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.
