Early results are expected later Thursday and an official tally on May 9.
Around 171 million people were eligible to cast ballots for the 560-seat legislature. A party or coalition that wins a fifth of the seats _ or 25 percent of the popular vote _ can nominate a presidential candidate.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party was expected to come out on top.
Electoral commission official Sri Nuryanti said polls officially closed nationwide at around 2:30 p.m. (0730GMT).
