US-led operation kills Afghan mother, children
AFP - Friday, April 10
KABUL (AFP) - - A US-led operation killed a teacher and her children, while a Taliban suicide attack left three policeman and two civilians dead Thursday, said officials, adding to this year's rapidly-rising death toll in Afghanistan.

The US military said it was probing allegations that it killed civilians in an overnight raid in the eastern province of Khost but admitted that investigations "suggested" they were not "enemy fighters".
Civilian casualties caused by international forces in Afghanistan have sparked anger and resentment, with President Hamid Karzai accusing the military of not taking enough care.
The US military said initially that its troops working with Afghan soldiers killed four combatants in a raid on a compound in Khost that targeted radical Islamist groups.
The Khost police chief in charge of counter-terrorism, who is named only Ghazuddin, told AFP that the troops climbed on the roofs of other houses to surround their target building.
The occupants of one of the homes, which belonged to a colonel in the Afghan National Army serving elsewhere, believed they were thieves and came out with guns, Ghazuddin said.
"The Americans shot them thinking they are insurgents," he said. The colonel's wife and daughter, son and brother were killed, he said.
Two women and a baby boy were wounded. "The coalition took the women and little boy to hospital for treatment. Later the boy died," he said, without being able to say what injuries had killed the baby.
The baby's uncle, Janat Gul, said the dead boy was seven days old.
The dead woman was a school teacher, the Afghan education ministry said in a statement, adding the girl was in the fourth grade at school, which would make her about 10 years old, and the boy was in the ninth grade, making him around 15.
Following the Afghan accusations, the US military said it had become aware of "non-combatant casualties" in the incident, three kilometres (two miles) south of Khost city, and was continuing to investigate.
"Coalition and Afghan forces do not believe that this family was involved with militant activities, and that they were defending their home against an unknown threat," it said.
In southern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber blew himself up near anti-drugs police in the Helmand province capital of Lashkar Gah, killing three policemen and two civilians, including a boy, an official said.
Another 17 people were wounded in the attack, Helmand government spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.
Police had initially said four policemen were killed but it emerged that one of the dead was not a registered policeman but a civilian, locals said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest in a rash of suicide bombings by the Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
Anti-drug officers are a high-value target for militants in Afghanistan, which produces 90 percent of the world's opium, most of it coming from Helmand, where some of it is also manufactured into heroin in drugs labs.
The 1996-2001 Taliban government was able to radically cut back Afghanistan's opium production but the insurgents now earn millions of dollars a year from the trade, officials say.
US President Barack Obama has launched a new sweeping strategy to combat the mounting threat from extremists and turn around the insurgency in Afghanistan, including a focus on eliminating Al-Qaeda bases in Pakistan.
