ADVERTISEMENT Funes led Sunday's polls with 51.2 percent of the vote after more than 90 percent of ballots were counted, electoral authorities said. "I'm the president-elect of the Salvadorans," Funes told a news conference in a hotel in the capital of the tiny, crime-wracked Central American nation. "Citizens who believe in hope and who have overcome fear have triumphed today," Funes said. "This is a victory of all the Salvadoran people." The provisional results suggested a seismic power shift in the impoverished nation, where former Marxist rebels appeared to have completed a journey to power 17 years after a devastating civil war. Funes, of the ex-guerilla Farabundo Marti National Liberation front pulled ahead of Rodrigo Avila, the candidate of the ruling rightwing party, who garnered 48.7 percent of the vote as counted neared a close. Avila, a former police chief and protege of outgoing president Elias Antonio Saca, warned on the campaign trail that a leftist victory would turn the country into a satellite of Venezuela and damage its strong ties with the United States. Thousands of the 2.5 million US-based Salvadorans came home to vote in an election expected to affect relations with the United States, which backed a repressive military government during a 1980-1992 civil war that killed over 70,000 people. With the apparent FMLN victory, El Salvador joins a growing tide of Latin American countries that have turned sharply left in recent years. Funes is the first FMLN presidential candidate who has never served as an armed combatant. Now a leftist party, the FMLN was a coalition of Marxist guerrillas who battled the government during the civil war. Funes has tough challenges ahead with the country set to be hard hit by the economic crisis and tough negotiations expected in a congress where no party has an outright majority.
