Billy Joel's daughter in New York hospital
NEW YORK - Alexa Ray Joel, the only daughter of singer-songwriter Billy Joel, was in stable condition at a New York hospital on Saturday, a publicist said. "Her doctors are assessing her needs. That's all we can say at this moment," Claire Mercuri, publicist for both Joel, 23, herself a musician, and her father, said in a statement.
Fans kept guessing about "Jackson 4" reunion
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's death put a sudden end to long-rumored plans for a Jackson 5 reunion, but brother Jermaine on Friday kept fans guessing about whether there might be a "Jackson 4" concert next year. "Those plans are in the works but you have to wait and see where it goes", Jermaine Jackson told reporters, referring to an upcoming reality TV show about the famous singing family.
"Anvil" rocks film documentary awards
LOS ANGELES - Rock on, Anvil. The aging band that never tasted music stardom found a measure of Hollywood fame on Friday when "Anvil, The Story of Anvil" won two film awards, including best documentary, from a key group of moviemakers. The International Documentary Association, a Los Angeles group that promotes and supports nonfiction film, late Friday awarded its top prize to "Anvil" director Sacha Gervasi for his story about the metal band that for more than three decades has tried, and failed, to score one major hit record.
Roman Polanski released to house arrest in Swiss chalet
GSTAAD, Switzerland - Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski was released on bail into house arrest at his Swiss chalet on Friday while he fights extradition to the U.S. over a 1977 charge of having sex with a 13-year-old girl. After more than two months in a Swiss jail, a Reuters journalist saw Polanski in one of two cars which swept past some 200 reporters and into the garage of the film director's luxury home in the upmarket ski resort of Gstaad.
"Invictus" achieves its goal without digging deep
LOS ANGELES - Nothing speaks so dramatically about Clint Eastwood's recent and remarkable burst of creativity as a director of awards-worthy films than the appearance of "Invictus," a historical drama that few if any filmmakers could have launched within the studio system. Here is a movie about Nelson Mandela, South Africa after apartheid and, of all things, the sport of rugby. None is high on any list of topics that studio suits crave, which tend more toward vampires and superheroes. Even the title -- that of a Victoria-era poem -- is obscure. When Warner Bros. releases it December 11 during a storm of year-end Oscar contenders, "Invictus" will pull its audience from adventurous, older moviegoers. Even the presence of Matt Damon, along with Morgan Freeman, will bring in only a small number of younger people. But for those who do buy tickets, it will be a pleasure for them to encounter a movie that's actually about something.
Washington letter, Poe book set auction records
NEW YORK - A signed four-page letter written by George Washington to his nephew in 1787 sold for $3.2 million, and two works by Edgar Allen Poe set new sales records on Friday in auctions held by Christie's. The letter by the first U.S. president was estimated to sell for $1.5 million to $2.5 million dollars, and smashed the previous 2002 record of $834,500 dollars for a Washington document, Christie's said.
Rolling Stone Ronnie's a nightmare says girlfriend's granny
MOSCOW - The grandmother of a Russian cocktail waitress who is dating Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood has told him to leave her granddaughter alone after he was arrested on suspicion of assault. Liudmila Ivanova, 76, scolded Wood in a video posted on Russian news site life.ru, clutching two photos of her granddaughter Ekaterina.
Kylie Minogue to release New York live set
LONDON - Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue is to release a download-only concert album, "Kylie Live in New York." Set for global release December 14, the album was recorded at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom earlier this fall as part of the diminutive singer's first North American tour.
Elvis Costello enjoys TV role as "carnival barker"
NEW YORK - Elvis Costello, the British singer-songwriter who swept through the London pub scene, the punk movement and the New Wave fad while retaining his signature sound, continues to release great work 30-plus years into his career. His latest project, the country- and folk-inflected "Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane," arrived June 9 on Hear Music. Costello is determined to make his mark on TV as well as popular music; his show, "Spectacle," blends music and interviews with superstars and up-and-comers. A DVD of the first season was released November 17, and the second season premieres December 9 on the Sundance Channel.
NYC Rock & Roll Hall of Fame annex to close
NEW YORK - Just one year after opening, the New York City annex to Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will close its doors on January 3, according to one of the corporate partners in the venture. S2BN Entertainment announced the closure in a statement.
