The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission _ revamped just a year ago to give it more bite _ has suffered a bout of low confidence, with critics saying it has failed to successfully prosecute high-profile cases. A government-ordered inquest is also probing the death of an opposition activist who plunged from the commission office's 14th floor after being questioned there. Commission deputy head Abu Kassim Mohamed, who takes over Jan. 1, pledged to regain public trust and reverse perceptions that the commission is ineffective and biased against opposition politicians. "Basically we think we are consistent, but the public thinks we are not consistent. We have to rectify this perception," he told The Associated Press. "That is the most important thing now." The current chief, Ahmad Said Hamdan, handed in his resignation Nov. 25, retiring before his term was to end in May. "I think it's the right time for me to go and give others a chance," Ahmad Said, 57, told the AP. "I'm very confident they can do it." Ahmad Said has denied that his resignation is related to criticism over the commission's interrogation methods following the July death of the opposition activist. Opposition supporters have accused the commission of causing the death. Commission officials have denied responsibility, saying the activist died after being released. Corruption is pervasive in Malaysia and ranges from small bribes to police officers to millions of dollars for contracts. Prime Minister Najib Razak, who took office in April, has promised to fight graft. Veteran opposition lawmaker Lim Kit Siang said under Ahmad Said, the anti-corruption commission had seen "its darkest days." "Under Abu Kassim, can MACC redeem itself and restore public confidence, which has plunged to lowest ebb in nation's history, as an independent, professional and fearless fighter against corruption?" he asked in a blog posting Saturday. Malaysia has fallen to 56th position out of 180 countries in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index in 2009, compared to 47th last year. The Transparency International report, published last month, said the commission appeared to focus on "small fish" and opposition politicians, and there seemed to have been little progress or political will in fighting graft.
