German finance minister hospitalised: ministry

BERLIN (AFP) - – Germany's wheelchair-bound finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, is in hospital and will remain there for about four weeks for treatment of infected skin lesions, his ministry said on Tuesday.
"The infections required treatment," the finance ministry said in a terse statement. "The experiences in the spring showed that he is also able to carry out his official duties from the hospital."
Confined to a wheelchair after a 1990 attack by a mentally disturbed man who fired three shots at him, Schaeuble, 68, spent weeks in and out of hospital earlier this year after scars from an operation failed to heal properly.
In May the conservative politician suffered an allergic reaction to medicine he took for the first time and had to be hospitalised again.
During his clinic stays, Schaeuble continued working but was unable to attend key European meetings as the eurozone confronted the worst crisis in its history, touched off by the Greek debt debacle in April.
He was also absent from a gathering of the Group of 20 industrialised nations in Washington that month.
Schaeuble's current condition is comparable to infected bed sores, a frequent ailment for people who use wheelchairs.
His hospitalisation will deprive Chancellor Angela Merkel of the full engagement of her most experienced minister as she attempts to get her fractious government on track, one year after her election to a second term.
The centre-right administration has been marred by infighting over central issues, including tax cuts. Schaeuble's ministry manages fiscal policy.
The euro appeared to resist any knock from Tuesday's news, gaining slightly in late afternoon trade to 1.347 dollars.
Earlier, Schaeuble attended a press conference with four other cabinet members to present a new government energy plan.
And on Monday he attended a meeting of European finance ministers in Brussels where he fought against French opposition for automatic sanctions for states that break budget rules.
Schaeuble's persistent health troubles prompted speculation earlier this year that he would resign. But Merkel frequently expressed her confidence in him and is said to have encouraged him to stay.
The self-avowed pro-European rose through the ranks in the ample shadow of longtime conservative leader Helmut Kohl, holding ministerial positions as well as being his chief of staff and one-time heir apparent.
Schaeuble known as one of the architects of national reunification, whose 20th anniversary Germany will celebrate on Sunday.
