U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell speaks during a news conference after meeting with Lebanon's President Michel Suleiman at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, near Beirut, September 17, 2010.

Wed Sep 29, 2010 8:22am EDT
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The United States is "determined more than ever" to achieve Middle East peace, its envoy to the region said on Wednesday during talks in Israel aimed at salvaging negotiations with the Palestinians.
There was no sign, in public comments at a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the envoy, George Mitchell, of any progress toward a formula that could avert a threatened Palestinian walkout over settlement building.
Mitchell said President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had asked him to deliver a message to Israelis and Palestinians assuring them of their commitment to achieving comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
"We knew this would be a road with many bumps -- and there have been many bumps, and that continues to this day," Mitchell said in a video released by Israel's Government Press Office of comments he made at the meeting.
"But we are not deterred. We are, to the contrary, determined more than ever to proceed to realize the common objective which we all share, of a Middle East that is at peace, with security and prosperity for the people of Israel, the Palestinians and for all the people in the region."
Peace talks that began on September 2 were plunged into crisis after a 10-month moratorium on new housing construction in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank expired on Monday.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to quit the negotiations unless the measure is extended, but has put off a decision until an Arab League forum discusses the issue on October 4.
Netanyahu, whose governing coalition is dominated by pro-settler parties including his own right-wing Likud, had rebuffed calls by Obama and other foreign leaders to extend the partial freeze.
PEACE AND SECURITY
"I am committed and the government is committed to make an effort to reach a peace agreement that will preserve the security and vital interests of the state of Israel," Netanyahu said, echoing remarks he made a day earlier.
"We are committed to following this path. I hope the good talks that I began with (Abbas) will continue without interruption so that we can try to achieve this goal," the Israeli leader said.
Mitchell, who met Netanyahu at the prime minister's private home in Caesarea, central Israel, was due to see Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday.
Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the Palestinian negotiating team, said on Voice of Palestine radio that "Israel alone will shoulder the responsibility for the collapse" of the peace process if it does not halt the construction in settlements.
Failure to keep peace talks alive would be a major political embarrassment for Obama, who faces the prospect of losses by his Democratic party in congressional mid-term elections on November 2.
A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States was not giving up hope that somehow the process could be rescued.

Here is the formula for Middle East peace:-
1) Inform Israel, that all military subsidies and transfer of technology cease as of 01/01/2011.
2) Engage the Saudis and their enormous influence, in becoming the main mediator and policeman in the region by 06/01/2011.
3) Hold both Russia and China accountable in the UN Security council, for leadership on security in the region. If this fails, the USA demits membership in the United Nations by 01/01/2012 and seeks new hemispheric alliances re: Nations for Global Security and Prosperity. (As a consequence WTO will be collateral damage)

Netanyahu keeps saying
“I am committed and the government is committed to reaching a peace deal.”
Is he also committed to grabbing as much land as possible and then not giving it back before the borders are drawn?

Wow, I wonder if the U.S feels the extent of her bruised ego! The mouse is slapping the cat around and having a time of his life at it …when did the U.S get so ‘GUMPED’?
HAIL ISRAEL …sad CS!

I’m not an American although experience would suggest that if US egos have been bruised then the compliment is likely to be repaid in full, possibly with interest.
By the way, what is “CS”?

I don’t know why the U.S continues to be party to and, by default, victim of the games played by Israel. The U.S needs to quit spending good hard earned amity on these monsters while they strategically commit genocide against Palestinians. Leave Israel to her own demise; let her be damned in her devilish ways. All Israelis really want is to commit holocaust against innocent Palestinian population while stealing their land, their home!

todonada, CS is choice acronym, or contraction, unfit for a respectable forum! And, the allusion is to the synthetic approach the U.S addresses very critical and important issues, in perfect alignment with absolute authority of both immaturity and recklessness. The Israelis know this, because Jews in the U.S have set the stage for this castrated and grossly emasculated nation, eager to waste her resources, including her soul, over, practically, nothing on behalf of these “Inglorious Bastards” (their choice label, not mine). It is extremely painful to watch, because we all know where this is leading. If you have any doubts, research the drumbeats post WW1 and leading into WWII. And here we are, maybe WWIII could likely be around the corner. Hot empty heads serve absolutely no purpose to humanity, and there is no hotter empty one than Israel …the larger Middle Eastern Arab population is a very close second. These two populations, when it comes to progressive human circumstances, are rhetorically backward! Really major douches! Get it! Cheers.

Think of the U.S as this divinely exquisitely breath-taking, drop F-dead, beautiful whore that everyone loves and just, beyond comprehension, adores, but will not publicly admit it. Now, think of this retard, in this case, Israel, as the only entity that’s publicly admitted and professed affection. And, not just this profession, but have also enlisted her into revamping her self-image and self esteem. Now, the trick is this whore knows the secrets of every idiot John out there; after all, they’ve all been her customer at some point in time. Now, imagine her tenacious blind-sided determination and willingness to protect this one idiot that publicly defended her honor. This is the twist, the closest analogy to the convoluted arrangements between these maniacal juggernaut and slimmest parasite!

Ah! Yes, I see now, thank you.
Your comments perhaps explain why Europeans tend to fret about the Middle East situation more than their US counterparts.
It’s closer to home and the Wars are still in the collective memory.
Although it is difficult to pin down a starting point for the Arab Israeli mess, the Balfour Declaration is a strong candidate.
This declaration was intimately connected to events in WW1.
Even though the UK later sought to backtrack on its’ support for Zionism by then it was far too late.

The comment about the Balfour Declaration is interesting. I would agree with the authors comments.
