Countries to release anti-piracy text as deal nears
WASHINGTON - Countries negotiating a deal to curb trade in fake and pirated goods are close to reaching an agreement in talks that have raised concerns among digital rights advocates, U.S. trade officials said on Friday. "The agreement can be concluded soon if other participants make it a priority to achieve such progress now," Nefeterius McPherson, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative's office, said in a statement.
Speedy scanner re-writes book on publishing technology
TOKYO - Simply flipping through a book may not seem like the best to way to scan it, but a Japanese research group at Tokyo University has created new software that allows hundreds of pages to be scanned within minutes. Scanning paper is normally a tedious process with each page having to be inserted into a flat-bed scanner, but the team led by professor Masatoshi Ishikawa use a high speed camera that takes 500 pictures a second to scan pages as they are flipped.
Cellphone satnav use surging in Europe
HELSINKI - Europeans are increasingly using their cellphones for satellite navigation in cars, directly threatening the personal navigation industry, research firm comScore said Friday. Competition for satellite navigation users has increased this year as the world's largest cellphone maker Nokia in January followed Google in starting to offer free navigation on phones.

SAN FRANCISCO - Sales of video game gear and software in the United States climbed 6 percent in March, industry tracker NPD said on Thursday, bouncing back somewhat after declining for two straight months. Hardware sales slipped 4 percent in the month, but software sales jumped 10 percent.
Microsoft says investigating China factory report
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Thursday it was investigating charges that young workers at a factory in China making its mice, cameras and Xbox controllers suffer overlong working hours and harsh treatment. A report, published by rights group the National Labor Committee earlier this week, alleged that teenaged workers at a factory operated by KYE Systems Corp <2365.TW> in Dongguan, China, faced military-style discipline, were fined for mistakes and housed in dirty dorm rooms after working 15-hour shifts.
Google profit rise fails to impress
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> posted a 23 percent jump in quarterly revenue on a rebound in Web advertising, but its stock fell 5 percent as the company disappointed some investors accustomed to blowout results. Investors were also caught off guard by the company's announcement that Chief Executive Eric Schmidt would no longer take part in quarterly earnings conference calls, as it aims to "streamline" the process.
AMD revenue beats Street but shares fall
SAN FRANCISCO - Advanced Micro Devices Inc <AMD.N> reported better-than-expected first-quarter revenue as PC and server spending rebounded, but investors cashed out of a rally triggered by stellar Intel Corp <INTC.O> results. The company -- which had posted 12 consecutive quarters of losses until the previous quarter -- said on Thursday its second-quarter sales would be seasonally weaker, striking a muted tone in contrast with Intel's bullish comments on corporate spending bouncing back in 2010.
Google, Yahoo countersue Xerox on search patents
NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O>, its YouTube video service, and Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> on Thursday filed counterclaims against Xerox Corp <XRX.N> in a lawsuit accusing them of infringing the document management company's patents on Internet searches. In filings in Delaware federal court on Thursday, the defendants sought declarations that they did not infringe the two patents at issue, or variantly that the patents are invalid and thus cannot be enforced by Xerox.
Opera says 1 million downloads of iPhone browser Day 1
HELSINKI - Opera Software's <OPERA.OL> Internet browser for Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone was downloaded more than one million times during the first day when it was available to consumers, the Norwegian firm said on Thursday. On April 13 Apple accepted distribution of Opera's browser for its iPhone after a long review, opening a new and potentially lucrative market it has so far closely guarded.
DreamWorks to convert "Shrek" cartoons to 3D
LAS VEGAS - As Dreamworks Animation prepares for the May 21 release of "Shrek Forever After," the studio is converting the first three movies in the hit franchise to the stereo format for a 3D Blu-ray Disc release. "Our movies exist in digital files to begin with. To go back and rebuild to a quality 3D experience is not inexpensive, but we are about to achieve a pretty high quality result," company CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Wednesday at the annual National Association of Broadcasters convention
