New York, NY, United States (AHN) - U.S. markets broke their six day winning streak with a bang as stocks took their worst tumble in two months following news the SEC has charged Goldman Sachs with securities fraud.

Stocks opened Friday lower as better than expected earnings from Bank of America failed to inspire investors. Additional weakness came into the market shortly after the opening bell when Michigan Sentiment for April came in at 69.5, well below the 75 expected.

Selling intensified in the late morning when news hit the SEC charged Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) with fraud in regard to collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), the same securities that were a key component to the credit crisis in late 2008.

The Dow Jones Industrial average tumbled 126 points or 1.1 percent as 28 of 30 components finished the session lower.

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and JP Morgan (NYSE: JPM), down 5.5 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively, weighed on the Dow most as financial were hit hard all session.

The S&P 500 fell 20 points or 1.6 percent, its worst percentage decline in two months. More than 90 percent of stocks in the S&P 500 finished the session lower. All 10 major economic sectors finished Friday lower.

Financials weighed most, down 3.8 percent as investment banks and brokers tumbled 9.4 percent on the day.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 34 points or 1.4 percent as tech joined the broad-based sell off. The sector also finished the day 1.4 percent lower.

In other corporate news, General Electric (NYSE: GE) reported a 32 percent drop in first quarter earnings.

The industrial and financial conglomerate said its GE Capital unit posted a profit in th period, but that loan losses still remain high, especially in commercial real estate.

On the economic front, housing starts in March hit an annual rate of 626,000, up from 616,000 in February and better than the 610,000 expected. Applications for building permits also jumped more than expected to 685,000, from 637,000 in February.

Monday’s market will see the release of March leading indicators. Expectations are for a 1 percent rise.
