World  |  Natural Disasters The USGS said the quake struck at 1:21 a.m. on Tuesday (3:51 p.m. EDT on Monday) 75 miles east of Port Blair at a depth of 79.4 miles. "Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a few hundred kilometers (miles) of the earthquake epicenter," the tsunami warning center said.
