Ed Case withdrew from the race in Hawaii's 1st Congressional district Sunday night in a bid to unite a divided Democratic party against former Honolulu city council member Charles Djou, who won the special election a little over a week ago. Case revealed his decision during the last day of the state Democratic convention. "My heart tells me to stay in this fight, but my head says this has become the wrong fight," he said. State Senate President Colleen Hanabusa now has a clear path to the party nomination. She welcomed his announcement and said she "look[s] forward to working even harder to earn back th[e] seat." Case is a former state lawmaker who served in Washington from 2002 to 2007, when he left Congress after an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate. He was the choice of the Democratic Congressional Committee in the open race despite local Democratic backing for Hanabusa. The DCCC commissioned Harstad Strategic Research to conduct a poll in April that found Case ahead of Hanabusa, 61 percent to 23 percent, in a two-way match-up. But the DCCC pulled out in the final weeks before the special election to invest its resources in the mid-terms this November. The move was acknowledged as a way to consolidate support in the general election, as well as a concession that Djou, who continued to lead in polls while Case and Hanabusa competed for Democratic support, would win the special ballot. Djou was sworn into office last week after winning the vote-by-mail special election nine points ahead of Hanabusa and 11 points ahead of Case. The Republican will serve out the remaining months of the term of former Rep. Neil Abercombie, a Democrat who held the seat for 10 terms and left last year to run for governor. Democrats are in danger of losing their majority this election year because of a contentious healthcare debate and continued public distrust of Washington. Several incumbents, including a Republican, lost primary battles this month. Hawaii's 1st Congressional district is where President Barack Obama was born, and it voted 72 percent for him in his 2008 campaign against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
