ADVERTISEMENT The government information department said 1,094 people from 439 families were taken home by bus to their native villages in the Eastern province. It did not say if those sent back were from a single camp. The displaced are ethnic Tamils who fled their homes during the 25-year civil war between government forces and Tamil Tiger separatists which ended in May. Authorities have so far resettled more than 3,000 people displaced during the final phase of fighting. But nearly 300,000 remain in the military-run camps where their movements are restricted, sanitation is poor and there is little water. Foreign governments and human rights groups have asked that the displaced be quickly resettled, but the government says it needs more time to weed out rebel fighters who may be hiding among civilians in the camps and de-mine the former war zones. It says it hopes to resettle 80 percent by the end of the year. Some aid groups have also expressed fear that the camps are actually military-run internment camps where displaced people are to be held indefinitely. Government troops defeated the rebels in May, ending their insurgency for an independent homeland for ethnic minority Tamils. According to United Nations estimates, 80,000-100,000 people were killed in the war that started in 1983.
